When A Crack In The Manifold Really Matters
Hi,
How serious is having a couple of cracks where they usually appear on a 1966 tripower manifold? When do you need to replace the manifold? Thanks, Don

It depends on where the cracks are and how much leakage you have. They usually crack at the heat riser passage. If you have that blocked, it's a non-issue. If in the water crossover, coolant leakage would not be acceptable--but they rarely crack there.
If the cracks are in the runners, vacuum leaks will affect idle, and need to be fixed. Welding or epoxy are two options. A used '66 intake is about $300-400. An aluminum repro costs about the same, but they have quality issues so you would need to do a careful inspection before using.
