Default Oil Filter Housing

Guys,
Finishing up a new build and noticed some residue in the oil filter housing that I've now cleaned.

My question is, is there any type of check ball or such in this housing for the bypass or just the spring and flapper/hold down?

I didn't notice anything like that when I had it all apart.

Thanks,

-joe

It's pretty low tech. Just a light spring, phenolic disc, retainer plate and bolt. When flow/pressure exceeds what the filter can handle, unfiltered oil goes to the engine. Better than no oil.

A 49 Ford flathead I pulled down last year only had a screen... it was surprising to find so little bearing/cylinder wear considering the enormous amount of sludge inside. I cleaned and resealed the motor and added an NOS factory optional filter kit that tee'd into pressure gauge port. It had decent compression and oil pressure. It ran well with its fresh tune up...

In days of old, oil was changed more frequently and screens were readily accessible. Some old stuff had only dip n splash lube systems yet survived.

Most racers and enthusiasts today change their oil even more frequently than the old time cars were done...

Sometimes I think we worry too much with our "modern" filtration systems.
