I have a good friend who, when he purchased his 66 GTO, found the the block was not numbers matching. However, it is a 69 Trans Am block, I forgot what the code is. He still runs the car with that block in it. I always tell him when he's hurting for money, that somebody needs that block and it should bring a nice $$$$.

Back in '86 I put a 73 455 in an 83 Buick Regal that my dad bought from my brother. It had a worn out 231. I did it because I was told I couldn't! I found a 78 Grand Prix with a 400 and got the fan shroud, radiator, brackets, pulleys and all accessories. It was a direct bolt in-even the air conditioner compressor! The only mods I had to make to the car included new front springs and a custom dual exhaust. The tranny lasted about three weeks and then a B&M T-350 went in. My dad griped but kept writing checks. You should have seen the grin the first time he drove it though! He eventually traded it in on Nissan Pulsar of all things. Said he wanted better gas mileage.

In the late eighties I was looking for a 428, called a junk yard and they told me I could find one at this forein make yard. So I called them and they had a 68 428 in a trans am but they had to sell the whole car.

In high school I had a buddy whose dad owned a machine shop. This buddy had a pretty nice '67 GTO that he proceeded to total out. Anyway, his dad had a nice '66 Chevy SWB fleetside that was his personal shop truck. He was looking at the remains of the Goat in his shop one day when inspiration struck. He crammed the 400/TH400 combo in the truck and went one better by installing the bucket seats and the entire dash. It was beautiful. then he finished it off in Marina blue with chrome reverse wheels. Drove it for years then sold it and it vanished. Wish I could see it again.

I found a 1978 W72 400 block sitting atop the front subframe of a 2nd generation firebird installed in a 1940 chev Hot Rod and the rest of the engine inside the car, all apart including the famous 6X#4's !!! I got a hold of the owner and bought the engine, I had to save it from rusting furthermore. The fenders and front grills were not on the car, just the hood.

I saw a 455 in an old Ford pick up in a junk yard near Nottingham, PA. I have not been there in a while to see if it is still there. A friend of mine put a deposit on it but never went back to get it.

Tinkerer, First off it's a bone stock 455 out of a 75 Grandville so it's not like it's a real powerhouse. I used an adapter plate that was purchased from Summit to bolt the engine and trans together. No other modifications. I have a converter lock-up kit that I have yet to install. I have used it like this for about 5 years now. I've towed a trailer with my 69 GP on it to Norwalk twice which is about a 3 hour one-way trip. Can't hardly tell it's back there until I try to stop. I have been a little concerned about it handling the torque so I kept the T-400 out of the Grandville just in case but so far it's worked perfectly. With the torque multiplication of the 700r4, it's a real stump puller on low end.

As a dedicated Pontiac powered advocate, I not only accept but encourage Pontiac power in anything at my annual Pontiac Heaven events here in Phoenix. Some of the things that have showed up are a mazda pickup with a 428 on the bottle, several camaros with 400s amd 455s, Wangers old suburban mentioned earlier, boats, etc, etc. This year we had a '66 chevy van show up with a twin turbocharged 428! I couldn;t believe it! So cool!
I have a friend who has a '65 389 that was mounted to a stand, it had a manual bellhousing and flywheel and an adaptor plate bolted to the bell. It was used to run a large industrial water pump of some sort. I have another friend who has one in a chev monza., another who has just put one in a '68 AMX 2 seater. As for me personally, I've done a few in boats but the most unique one I have done is have one power a 10,000 watt generator head. I ordered a large diameter pulley with a 1/2" toothed gilmer belt. I had it machined to fit a Pontiac crank shaft snout then built brackets to run the generator off of the Pontiac motor! Thats REAL Pontiac Power! Steve Barcak www.pontiacheaven.org
