Carter AFB carb question
Could someone please tell me what this part is attached to my carb - circled in attached pic below the fuel inlet?
It seems to be some sort of button/plunger, the white plastic part on the end pushes in and there are two tabs on the back of it for electrical connectors which were disconnected when I got the car. About to rebuild the carb and want to get this hooked up right. Its a Carter AFB on a 1965 389 engine with auto trans, thanks! |

That's the kick down switch for the auto trans I believe.

The wiring for that switch is a little complicated and changes colors a couple times. If you want to wire it like the factory, here is the layout. The circuit starts at the fuse box. It looks like that circuit if fed by the fuse that is two fuses below the radio fuse. Sorry I can't do any better but the diagram is very smudged out. But the radio fuse is clearly marked and it is 2 fuses below that one. The wire leaving the fuse box is black with a yellow tracer. That wire zig-zags all over the place and eventually enter a splice and comes out black with an orange tracer. That "hot" wire goes to the switch. It leaves the switch black with an orange tracer as well and goes to a single wire connector at the transmission case for the downshift solenoid. The solenoid is case grounded to complete the circuit. So it's really a simple circuit other than the zig'zag wiring and the color change. When the switch is closed, usually 80% or more throttle, that energizes the solenoid and you get a downshift, if line pressure and governor pressure are within range. Hope this helps.

I am always amazed at all the work that went into the linkage systems on these cars with the Carter AFB.. That 1965 big Pontiac was one of the nicest cars to ever come out of Detroit... I'll never forget my first drive with a Turbo 400, it was in a 68 442 to boot, wow..
