Default Water pump replacement

Has anyone replaced their water pump without removing the timing belt?

Are there any issues with the belt getting water/coolant on it when replacing?

just clean off the belt before you put it back together I have had belts soaked in oil and just cleaned them off with some brake clean. these belts are pretty sturdy

Not that Difficult, just have to remove the rear belt cover that is held on with the front 2 accessory drive bolts. Done it many times. As GTOWAGON has said just clean off any coolant that gets on the belt.

The belts are very well over engineered.
Pontiac brass was not keen on the use of a belt,
thus why so many test prior to production were conducted.

Many years back I was fortunate to communicate with Bill Knafel and he shared some insight about the extreme testing his team conducted.
His results along with the in house engineering test are what sold PMD to go forward.

They can outlast most engines if kept away from long term UV and oil exposure and/or physical damages.

More than once I have re-used belts in the past.

Just a heads up for anyone looking.
Belts are in very limited availability, as are water pumps.
Rock Auto offers a rebuild service,
I would think with a little searching a re-builder could be found in your area.

Looks like Flowkooler lists pumps also, pics appear to be a different pump, but i would think the impeller is the same, so they should be able to rebuild them.

what is considered long term UV exposure as i'm not running the belt cover at this time?

All the pumps shown/listed on the FK link appear to be Chevy 230/250 IL 6 (Pre 66 and post 69 OHC)

Long term UV exposure on anything rubber turns brown/chalky which leads to micro cracking. IMO one would have be exposed to sunlight repeatedly for sometime before I think it would be an issue.
As long as one is not driving around with their hood off all summer it should be good

I was able to buy both 66-8 and a 69 OHC water pump from Rock Auto. They were around $40 each.

That's good news.
Less then a month ago when I checked inventory they were only offering rebuild service. Now if only correct starters would turn up.

Still on original belt and W/P 95,000 and counting.... I actually lifted a 350 engine with an old belt just to see how strong it was... Darn thing didn't break..
