Whatever one is willing to pay
The last set I saw on ebay (over ten years ago) sold for 31 or 32 hundred bucks. I would imagine a little north of that now a days???

I can't believe that it's been 15 years since I built this! Used the ERTL '70-72 style Trans Am as the base. Shaved the wheel opening flares, cut the chin spoiler off. Had to use a little filler where the flares were. Plastic style valances was made from a thin sheet of aluminum and epoxy. not much to work with underneath. IIRC, i had to cut a lot of base plastic away and was barely able to retain the screw on the underside that holds the front end together. Interior and engine are from an ERTL '73 version. Created this to test color scheme ideas i had for the car a the time. Didnt' prime it and painted the doors off the car, so there is some bleed through on the filler and a shade variation on the doors from being shot at a different angle. (Testor's Panzer Grey)

Bob, do you recall your Super Duty being louder or quieter when compared to other new Firebirds back then?

Talking

Louder even when new. I went to Gettysburg back in 70's POCI conv and took the SD. I drove it there on Rt 30. I was 'escorted' out of a small Pa town by the police it was after midnight.I didn't get pulled over. At the conv. I was driving back to the hotel on the show field and heard one guy say to another my SD doesn't sound like that meaning mine. I only say I drive it. I didn't do anything to the exhaust. I have new RA Rest. manifolds and Pypes for the car. I just 'can't' bring myself to take the original off the car.

Default Mecum Dallas - Super Duty's in abundance

So does anyone know who is selling all the SD cars at Mecum Dallas? There are five selling, including the three below from the same seller. It's interesting they are all wearing BFG radials instead repro Poly's. Even the Brewster car that is listed as being MCACN Gold.

All look sharp, but I love that white one with the red interior....

Default SD's at Mecum.

I think that if the tires were period correct they can be used on these cars. That's just my .02 cents worth……...

The green 73 was at the MCACN with my car last year. I heard he is selling a total of 6 cars at Mecum. I think his name is Todd. Looks four of them are no reserve! Only the green SD and the red 71 HO have reserves.

General"s were on many high performance Pontiac's. Firestone, and Goodyear ( think Goodyear winning Indy on them in '72) were Both "more" expensive options than a General for GM to install.
Check out this picture, and note the car its on

On the Brewster '73 -

"Believed to have been tuned by George DeLorean in 1986"

I nearly did a coffee spit-take when I read that. Bit of a reach - even for an auction house.

Mecum is a stickler or any claims. Unless you have paperwork to prove something, they always put in the "believed to be" phrase. When I initially consigned my 17,000 mile hemi charger last year I had to include the scanned documents (and I had a lot!) to prove the mileage before they would say "documented 17,000 actual miles" in the listing instead of "believed to be 17,000 actual miles".

Does anybody else find that $20,000 in 1975-76 dollars is a lot of money to spend to end up going only 11.89 in a 1973 Super Duty Trans Am?

.....you have to understand the rules of "Stock Eliminator". It's a tough class to compete in with hours and hours of meticulous detail given to factory parts in order to run the numbers.
check out where the original SD oil pump is replaced with a regular Pontiac pump.....
12 different camshafts, each are a one-off profile(not off the shelf stuff) to find optimum performance.
Yes, racing(any type) is expensive.

11.89 is fast in a stock part SD, but according to table I used, 20K 1976 is 83K today, so, yes YOWZA.

Anyone know when and why the price of the SD engine option dropped in 1974?

I was perusing some 74 SD PHS' and never really paid a lot of attention to the price.

Most (early) were $578 for the engine.
Around June, the price was $525.
So some got a good deal on the SD TA.
(almost pay for the hood bird with the savings )

The answer to the price drop for the SD engine in 1974 is that in 1974, the HEI distributor was standard on the 400 and 455 (non SD) engines. The SD still had the standard points distributor, and GM gave a price concession for the deleted feature.
