Dennis,

Nice score on the Formula 400. Here's a picture of the spare tire and rim from my old 1970 Formula 400, and I'm pretty sure it was the original to the car. I think the Goodyear Polyglas tires were for the 15 inch wheels and the Firestones were for the 14 inch wheels.

Dennis,
It's actually been my observation that in '70, Pontiac seemed to have sourced the 15" white lettered tires from Goodyear (i.e. all TAs had the Polyglas GTs), but at least some (I'm inclined to say all based on what I've seen over the years... but never say never) of the 14" RWL tires from Firestone. My '70 Formula had one original tire still with it when I bought it (14" Rally Wheel car), and it was a Firestone Wide Oval.

BTW, congrats to you guys - that is a very cool car!

Thanks Craig! Dan actually owns the car with me, but we are now esteemed members of the Lucy Blue club.

Eaglesan13 & Keith K, thanks for the clarification on the Firestone vs. Goodyear tires. I now recall seeing the '70 TA in Rocky's book on display with F70 - 14's when PMD considered making that the standard tire on the TA.

Canamman77, thanks for the date deciphering for the 721 radials. Funny that they were installed and never driven on. They still have the nubs sticking out of the tread.

Here is the original 50 year old nylon/aluminum gear and chain that is wearing quite well considering.

Maybe it is one of the original tires to the car...?

Craig, Nope, it has a bunch of hairline cracks in the nylon teeth and looks like it wasn't long for this world, so we caught it in time. The new gears and chain were installed yesterday by Dan. The old one in now garage wall art!

The pictures of your tire look the same as mine, so your tire might actually be an original tire.

Rocky, Here is the picture of the box with the Cloyes part number.

Dan has the engine all back together along with the rebuilt 7040270 Q-jet and stock distributor with its original factory advance weights and springs. The carb had 69 primary jets with 37 primary metering rods and DL secondary metering rods on an F hanger...all which appear to be original. Dan is going to check the electrical tomorrow before refiring the motor. After is has been run and thoroughly checked, Dan is going to check the actual compression with the Whistler (once it has cooled to about 170 degrees).

The original RA air cleaner base may have slight 'bumps' for the Holley carb fuel bowls??? They aren't as pronounced as the '70 GTO RA bases and are hard to discern...Jonny?

We will report back then to share what its actual static compression ratio is.

Messy thread in the Street section trying to determine if Morse still sells these silent chains.

Not to divert, but would you mind posting photos of any markings on this original chain? Is "Morse" stamped anywhere?

Same question regarding the crank sprocket. Is it obvious what it was made from (cast iron or steel)? Any way to tell if it was hardened?

Your car is awesome and a wealth of info. Thanks for sharing and congrats on finding it.

Tnx

Dennis, I have pictures that I can dig up;
does that base have mounting studs for the engine mounted alignment tabs?

Graduations Dan and Dennis great car ,I have a 1972 Trans Am with a firestone wide oval 72 dated tire in the trunk F-60-15 . I wonder if they were offered on the Trans Am in 72 for the first year or they started in 73?
