Default Back...to basics...

I'm sure I've done this before......but it's been awhile....many moons...and birds....

Am putting a stock 400 with TH400.....into a 73 bird...

and want to drop them in...as a unit....

I'm thinking that I can pull the hood and trans cross member....and drop the whole thing in together...

Victim has AC...iv that matters...

Thanks for any input..

You will need an engine leveler, car up about 18 inches. Use 2, 6 ton Jack stands (Not Harbor Freight) under subframe. 6 ton stand have a wider footprint. Put a plug in the transmission as the angle will be steep. May want extra set of eyes as you put it in. May have to put manifolds on first. Good luck

I have not yet tried this but experts swear that raising the tail of the car makes for a sweet transplant.

I like to have both the front & back up on stands. With a leveler it’s pretty easy.

Good luck!

Update.....Did the deed yesterday afternoon.....as per everybodys suggestions....and it went reasonably well....but left the manifolds off.....

May regret that later...but sure was nice seeing the engine mounts to line them up...from the top...

'nother question...

Previous owner hacked the last 20 " of the wires to starter......and tossed with original engine...(see picture)

The rest of engine harness looks decent......so I am going to attempt repair...

Obviously the fat red wire goes to the big solenoid terminal...

Next fatist...to S terminal....Start?

and the skinny wire to R terminal...Run?

If I have that right....I recall that the "run wire"....is a resistance wire...that reduces running voltage to distributor...

Have I lost the resistor....with the wire hack?

Plan B'''is run a HEI.....but think I want to retain points on this project...

Start terminal "S" should be a purple wire. "R" terminal is for "Relay" and is not a resistance wire. This is a regular wire that supplies power to ignition at full voltage only while cranking. The resistance wire comes out of the bulkhead connector and is used for normal running. If I remember correctly, the "R" terminal wire might be yellow??

Ok...I see that the ignition coil connection from harness has a yellow and black connected...which I'm guessing would be the full 12 volt and resistance wire controlled thru ignition switch?

One more wiring question...

Transplanted engine is from a 75......and was running last...with an HEI.....which is still installed.

I will prolly replace it with a points style distributor....but will attempt initial fire-up...with HEI.

I know I need a FAT power wire......from cap coil......

Where is the best place to take power from.......fuse block?

My 75 uses a heavy gauge wire (10 or 12 gauge) to power the HEI.

Install a "Pink wire" into the fusebox right where the current resistor wire is. Its only 12 bucks, and its done right and the HEI is very reliable.
You can, of course "hot wire" it with a thick wire from the battery for temp start.

I'm good with HEI's.....Just want to stay stock (with points) on this one right now...

So basically I can just power the FAT red wire......off the battery....or alternator hot post....for temporary ...OR...any open spot on the ignition side of fuse box?

Has to be 10 amp service point. Battery or alternator is fine. It could melt a cheap thin test wire with clips on it..
