Default What is the proper method to installing the rubber boots for Ram Air air cleaner?

I have 1971 HO setup with pan under hood and correct air cleaner. What is the proper way to attach the rubber boots from the air pan to the air cleaner?

The boots attach to the ram air pan on the underside of the hood.

So do they just slide into the pan opening or is there a trick to getting them to stay in place?

The boot ID is larger than the OD of the air cleaner assembly holes, they simply accordion down when hood is closed.

I misread your post. I believe there’s a lip/recess on one end of the boot that holds/locates it to the upper pan, from there it gets screwed into place with 3 small self tapping screws. At least that’s what I’ve seen on cars in the past.

Okay I will check for screw holes as that is the part I did not notice.

LG - as RMP mentioned, the boot diameter is larger than the pan opening. There's a lip on the boot that fits in the pan hole. Mine doesn't have any screw holes so they can spin around if you move them, although I thought I saw some in the past that were staked down with screws (Firebirds perhaps?).

the firebirds didn’t use a hood pan, rather they used formed retainers which the boot attached to (much like as described above), and those were affixed to the hood;
The retainers were attached to the hood with three 5/16”(?) bolt head coarse thread screws.
