Hate to see that! But at least I'm hoping the '67 they used for the film was already wrecked.
Per end credits, the filming took place in L.A. County, California... but with cooperation from "Emergency Squad Training Institute - Normal, Illinois" which is 5 miles from where I live! Although I don't think that training group exists anymore... |

Yes very sad to watch.
Just a cool Show & Tell on all those nifty tools and procedures of extraction. I thought I heard one of the firefighters say, Yea it's got a Hurst in it

Cool Video
George Hurst “Jaws of Life” tool.
I remember having to watch films of auto accidents in drivers education in high school. Chris.

The ones I remember from HS Drivers Ed were Signal 30's. Nasty stuff. I think I slowed down for a day or two. Its that indestructible attitude of a 17 year old I guess that held the concern for such a short period of time. Miss that in some ways. Looking back, no air bags, seat belts, a metal rod of a '62 steering column pointing right at your chest...what, me worry??!! Nah! Damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead!!

I have used the Hurst tool on several occasions during the 30 years I spent with the fire department here. Saved some and lost some.

I started just before turning 19, and lasted 28 till got tired of the politics. Our area covers several miles along the RT30/I65 corridor so had alot of BAD ones. Had 4-5 extrications first month before 1st bad fire. Last count how many(100's) but still occasionally dream about the worst ones. Got so good became instructor for our 4 depts after 5 yrs. BTY, swear can even smell those dreams too. You know how bad can be with battery acid, coolant, trans fluid, etc, spilled all over. Not to mention burnt flesh...

In late 1983 I thanked George Hurst for creating the Jaws of Life. Sadly he decided to end his own life the following year. I still have a couple of letters that I got from him before that happened.
