Default NHRA stock classes

Reading old coverage of the Indy Nationals, I see that C, D, and E stock were all won by Pontiacs in 1973 (Truman Fields in C).
I can't remember- was that prior to individual car brands being "factored" differently? Or were they still classed solely on advertised-HP/weight ratio?

Im not sure when Stock and Super Stock factoring came into play.

I know by 1979 it was being used. During the time when I was building the Mustang Super Stocker my combination was factored 3 times ( from 280 to 335 hp)
