Default 1967 400 HO/4 Speed Starter - Info Request

Hello all. I’m in the process of removing my WV code engine to replace rear main seal and doing some detail work on engine and engine bay. I was unable to get the starter off the engine without first removing the LH exhaust manifold. It was an absolute bear. The length of the starter assembly would not allow me to move it forward and tilt down. The nose would not clear the bell housing before the front end hit the frame crossmember. Once I removed the manifold and got the starter out, I noticed it’s not the original starter. Looks like it’s from a Camaro. I suspect the aluminum nose is too long/incorrect for the car.

I’m hoping that someone here can/will measure overall length of the correct starter. I think the original part is GM 1108335(?)

That number is for the 68/69? HO starter I think.
67 is 1107355 I believe.
But anyways the starters are basically the same size, (HD ones anyway).
The chevy would have a different bolt pattern I think on the nose section and aimed opposite.
It could have the nose section from a Pontiac on the main body though.

1108353 was also used in 67 on HO/RA.

I do see GM 1107355 listed as well. I do not see GM 1108353 until 1968.

I'm hoping that someone here will confirm that GM 1107355 is indeed appropriate for my May 1967 built HO/4 speed (WV code) car. This part number seems to be much easier to find that the others.

Same 1967 year, same WV code engine, same H.O. exhaust manifolds and I replaced the stock starter several times over the years without touching the exhaust. Wonder what was changed on your car to make the removal difficult? I don't think it makes a difference but mine was a January build out of Fremont, CA.

Interestingly, I found a correct part numbered (?) starter. It measures exactly the same as the NTFP unit I wrestled out of my car. Something isn't right but I can't figure out what it might be. The starter I took out measures 11.5" overall and 2.5" from mounting holes' centerline to end of nose casting. There's not enough length clearance to lower the nose out of the bell housing before the front end hits the engine cradle /frame.


I was finally able to get the starter out by removing exhaust manifold bolts from head and nuts from exhaust pipe. By pivoting the engine on the mount, I was about to wiggle the starter motor to the point where I could get to the elec connections and then could maneuver it out of the car. Clearly, something is awry but I cant't seem to figure out what it is. Ideas?

Does the starter have the rear mounting strap/bracket on it?

I guess it all depends on how you’re holding the starter while trying to figure out why you can’t get it back in.

The black, stamped steel bracket that supports the forward-facing end was NOT present when I disassembled it. I don’t see how, with the setup I have, that bracket could be installed/used. I have this bracket on my C3 Corvette, so I am familiar with it and its placement.
