I was offered this car last night and I was just wondering what you all thought a good price would be.
The details of the car are, First of all it needs a TOTAL resto. Good stuff is that it is supposed to be a numbers matching car, 400, which has a spun bearing, rebuildable, but does run, 4 speed, air conditioning, rear window defrost, rear spoiler, manual windows are what I saw just taking a quick look. It has had the front fenders and nose replaced already with used parts and comes with used quarters, a trunk lid with spoiler, and a used hood with good teeth in it. The odometer reads 100121 miles. The black interior needs to be completely replaced, original exterior color is a sliver blue color? The underside seems in very nice shape, subframes look rusty but solid. He knows that the car is desirable.

I want to start off saying that I love these cars (as well as 71-73 Formula 400/mt cars), and think they're overshadowed by their larger displacement Formulas right now.

Your issue in trying to ascertain value, is that very few of these cars are built original/right;
Most are built customized to one degree or another, and take a hit in their resale value as a result.
The pros you have going for it:
- last year before catalytic converters and 7.6:1 compression
- 400/4bbl (most 71-74 Formulas seem to have been built as 350/2bbl cars)
- four speed (this is a biggie)
- the "hood air inlet" (aka: "Ram Air") option

Let's look at this another way;
This Formula is higher powered, and faster than any 1975-1981 Formula Firebird.

Is this worth anything near a '73-400/4spd car, no, but this would also probably be only worth a miniscule amount less than a 1974 400/4spd TA - a car that is probably more often than not restored right/original.

Probably W66.

W66 is for Formula.

You have to keep in mind that if you want to restore a 74 some parts are a (1) one year only. Quarter panels, gas tank some interior parts. By the way is the distributor points or electronic?

I stopped by the car again today and can answer a couple of more questions

The car has a points distributer
The interior is the Deluxe Black interior

There was a black vinyl and black cloth;
My former '73 Formula was an ascot silver over beige cloth interior car - I LOVED that interior;
But it was previously my brother's car, so I gave it back to him.
... anywho, the '74 black cloth interior was the same make up and design as the 1973 cloth interior, just in monotone black, not beige & brown.

Seriously, I think you'd be upside down on anything you offer.

Parting out, $2-3,000. He's going to want more than that.
Rebuild engine, $4-5,000, plus purchase price. Resell, might be able to break even, but doubtful.
Body and paint, $20-25,000. Interior, another $2-5,000. Anything else that arises, $5-10,000 more. Resell, for maybe the price of the body and paint.

It is the Vinyl Black interior. No cloth.

Owner has told me bought the car 6 years ago for $3250.00. He thinks he overpaid for it at that time. We have not discussed a price yet but I am sure he is going to want to get at least that out of it. He told me today that he is going to get the PHS for it along with a PHS for a 67 Firebird Convertible with a 326 in it. That car is going up for sale also.

Ransom, Your numbers are a real eye opener. I know what I have in my 71 LeMans Convertible and I know I will never get that out of it. This car needs to be done right and I am afraid it may be more than what I can commit to it. For the experienced restorer it may be an easy project.

I will know more when I talk to the owner again.

Well, getting the PHS invoicing is the first step.
I think he paid a fair value for the car, if it is an original RA car. Most people want a '70-3 RA car more tho.
Again, it will be the ROI that will kill this project to me.

I would love to see the PHS if you can post it, as well as others I'm sure.

Let us see what happens. I looked under the hood, ram air aircleaner and two rubber connectors from the hood looks like it will set right on it. Aircleaner lid was chrome also, is that correct?

I do not believe that chrome air cleaner lids were intalled at the factory after 1970;
you could buy them at the dealership as over the counter items though.

Chrome lid is not correct for '74. Might be the aftermarket kit.
