Factory tachs in 65-66 full size
Was a factory tachometer installed in all 65-66 full size Pontiacs if they were ordered with a 4 speed? In Canada you got a tach if you bought a 4 speed but I keep seeing US models with 4 speeds without them.

This brochure says the tachometer was standard equipment in a 1965 Grand Prix if it was equipped with a four speed manual transmission, but it was optional on other models. http://oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA...g/image15.html The standard equipment tach in Grand Prixs was apparently dropped in 1966. http://oldcarbrochures.com/static/NA...g/image15.html

Wow, that's interesting. Usually our Canadian cars are "strippers" vs. the US equivalent but in this case I guess that's not the case. I'm glad I asked, I would have lost that bet! Thanks.

I always wondered if those tachs were for the passenger, I wish they would of put a tach in the driver could see while driving..

They are mounted to the left of the driver, perfect. Maybe you’re thinking of the console mounted vacuum gauges?

I've got a feeling the Canadian big cars with a console such as a Custom Sport or maybe a Grand Parisienne had the tach mounted in the console. It sort of laid down semi-flat rather than if (for example), someone mounted a tach into a vacuum gauge pod.
I have a '65 Parisienne brochure at home but its stored while we are doing some renovations so I can't get to it easily. Maybe someone else can dig one up?

I almost bought a Custom Sport before I found my 2+2. Vac gauge was in the console. I am not savvy enough to post the link to the thread. but if you search my name, the thread was Parisienne or Catalina.

The 65-66 full size Canadian Pontiac tach was only mounted in the same location as the US models, on the left side of the dash just under the pad.
66 Custom Sports had no vacuum gauge but the 65 Custom Sport had a vacuum gauge in the 3rd pod (far right side). The Canadian models didn't have a vacuum gauge or tach on the console for 65 or 66 unless someone mounted it there after the car was built. Heybuck, I mounted my tach in my 66 Strato Chief in the exact same spot as my factory tach 66 Grande Parisienne had it, using one of those beautiful repro cups (which I believe you are responsible for)! |
