What color should the steering gearbox be? I thought I could see some traces of black on mine but I think most were a cast iron gray color. Thanks

Pretty much rust from the first day it sat outside of the plant. People paint them because it looks better than rust.

I had my sloppy, leaking mess of a steering box rebuilt at Powersteering.com. The folks there did a great job and I opted for the 12:1 quick ratio upgrade. Expensive but well worth it as I had already had a bad experience with an unmentioned aftermarket company's "quick ratio" 500-series box .
Anyway, the finish options are the standard painted finish (which I chose) or the show detailing, which goes further and includes the little dabs of color paint or stickers, etc.
In either case, the paint color was a very nice cast iron gray. Not sure if it's "concours" but sure looks appropriate for the car.

All untouched gearboxes I have seen were bare metal.
