Default 1973 Lemans Sport Coupe w/ GTO option owners

So, I’m curious to know just how many 1973 Leman Sport Coupe owners are members on this forum, with that said, I realize I have read that in 1973 there was just over 4800 built, is that the actual GTO build number ? does that mean they all had the GTO badging and options ? How many of that build number were just Sport Coupes ? Where I live I have been to a lot of car shows, and I see once in a great years from 64-72 and some are original GTOs and some are clones ( which I can’t stand ) but, I have chevelles, cuda, and our muscle car era clones as well, but, this topic has to do with the 1973 Body style. Thank you

according to what I could find, there were 494 73 gtos built with the big side window, and 4312 with the louvered window. for a total 73 gto production of 4806. of course you could order a sport coupe wo the gto option as well. I have one of those.

Oh , thank you zeebo for that info, that number seems high compared to the availability of salvage parts. I had a 73 GTO, unfortunately in had windshield rot to the point that it would have costed more than I could handle, and I checked with most salvage yards and metal shops and just had to part it out, which even trying to part out was s chore, no one even inquiries on the parts, so that’s why I was curious on this, thank you

I am aware of the total 1973 build number and I appreciate Zeebo replying and his numbers breaking it down as far as body styles with louvers and non louver, that I did not know, but How many 1973 GTO owners are members on this forum ?????

I have a 73 GTO Sport Coupe (with the louvers), which is the most numerous of the 73 GTO's.

The 73 GTO Coupe had the big quarter windows without louvers.

There was even a 73 GTO Sport Coupe offered without the louvers. It had the Sport Coupe interior with buckets, console with floor shifter, but had the big windows like a Coupe. There was a Pontiac memo saying the option would become available 1/30/73. It's very rare. I think somebody had a picture of one here on the forum in the past.

So, the total production number of 73 GTO's was 4806 as zeebo said. And yes, that means with GTO badging and everything. You might think that's a lot, but the 73 GTO production was the lowest of any year of GTO. 1973 was the first year for the new Grand Am, which took a lot of sales away from the GTO. They sold a lot of Grand Ams in 73 with 34,445 2-door Grand Ams being produced.

But there were also nearly 51,000 73 Lemans Sport Coupes produced, and 68,230 73 Lemans Coupes made. Since the GTO was a Lemans Sport Coupe or a Coupe with the GTO option, they share all body parts with the Lemans. So, there really should not have been any shortage of body parts to repair your GTO, since the bodies are the same as Lemans other than the decals and a few emblems. Of course, I understand that even when the metal is available, body work can be expensive.

Thumbs down

You are correct, Grand73am, the 73 indeed did not come with a spoiler and was never an option on the model, somewhere a P.O. has added it to this car. So, i wasn’t originally looking for build numbers as I knew the 1973 GTO was a low production build, my question was , How many 1973 Lemans with the GTO options are Members here on the forum ??? I was just curious, and as one of the members that replied to this topic, there are very few good salvage parts out there, but it seems these salvage yards want big $$$$ for this model and zero aftermarket parts available for the most part, and that really doesn’t have a huge following as let’s say the 64-72 models, myself I like all the models of 64-72 GTOs including 73-74, infact I would rather own a 73/74 which I have because they are the “odd balls of the GTO history “ if owners of this model don’t mind me saying it that way. It’s no big deal I was just curious to see just how many of this body style are still road worthy. I do appreciate all that have replied and the info you all have shared, I come from a family that have been big GTO followers.

I own a 73 Sport Coupe. Originally Valencia gold with saddle interior with a Pontiac 350 and a HD Muncie 3 speed. Been working on cutting out the rot and welding in new metal. Hopefully it'll be back on the road after the 1st of the year. [IMG][/IMG]

I forgot to mention earlier that for the front and back windshield channel repairs, all the other 73-77 GM a-bodys, like Chevelle, Monte Carlo, Grand Prix, Cutlass, etc., have the same windshield metal, and the ones with the same Lemans semi-fastback roof like Chevelle, Cutlass S, 442, and Century have the same back glass metal.

New Chevelle floor pan sections are available, and are the same as Lemans.

Also, if you join a couple of Facebook groups dedicated to the 73-77 GM a-body Colonnade, and 73-77 Lemans, it makes it easier to find some parts.

I had a 73 Grand AM many years ago that same color. Sold it to someone in Ill. Wish I had kept it.

Default Thumbs up on Grand Am!

HUGE thumbs up on the Grand Am in that color combo. I have driven a 1974 Lemans Sportecoupe since 2004 and it's the most reliable car I've ever had. Put over 100k miles on it and more reliable than my wife's Audi!

Body parts are hard to find (and expensive from junk yards because they don't sell enough to make money).

Try Frank's Pontiac outside of Palm Springs CA. Frank has everything. I got a NACA hood there for $800 bucks a few years ago.

Reminds me of Dave Rasmussen's 73 GTO. Some of you might remember his 73 GTO Odyssey story that he used to have on a webpage, about how he bought an unrestored Valencia Gold 73 GTO in CA and drove it back to TN, documented the trip, along with some fun facts about 1973. It looks like the page is no longer up, but this person saved some of it on this blog. For those who didn't see it, or want to refresh your memory, here's the link: http://rockindownthehighway.blogspot...with-dave.html
