Let's say it's even a Ram Air IV or convertible Judge too. If someone changed the car's color from brown or green to red, how much does the value go down even if it's a numbers matching, PHS authenticated Judge.

Have seen a few cars like that over the years and was wondering.

Kills it IMHO …. the rarer the colour or odd ball combination makes it all that much more desirable.

I dunno- I went to that auction in Auburn and an absolutely beautiful brown 70 Ram Air IV judge sold for something like 60k. From what I understand it was a very high quality restoration. I would think if it was red, black, orbit orange, or really anything but brown it would have sold for more.

As much as I'd like to say it kills the value because I'm a purest I'm probably wrong.
Years ago some called me from a swap meet with a 70 black judge with red Interior and I said check the trim tag for me if it's a real black/red car I'll buy it. He called me back and read the codes to me and it was a green on green car. I told him I'll pass because that kills the value. He then called a dealer friend of his and he bought it and took it to auction and made 10 or 15 k on it. The dealer said who cares what color it was because it's a desirable color now and he was right.
I still do t buy or like color change cars but that's my personal preference.
Don't think it matters to a lot of buyers

I have to agree with that. I bought my 69 GTO with matching numbers and hideaways in 2000 and immediately changed the brown to a another factory color - burgundy. Haven't regretted it one bit but it's not a real valuable car.

Certain colors were popular when these cars were made and still are.
Depends entirely on the buyers intended use....... (unrestored Purist, flipper, used car salesman, numbers matching fanatic, part out hound, or just wanting to drive and enjoy), to purchase one of these old cars.

I think:
color change to a non factory correct color is deadly for resale value

Color change to a similarly popular or unpopular factory correct colors (say green to brown for example) will somewhat hurt value

Color change to a more popular factory correct color (say green to red) will likely increase value somewhat or speed up the sale time.

If its your dream car, build it to how you see fit, not to what its worth. A car for yourself may never get sold. If you are building it to flip, build it to how it originally was.

That is my thought too North.

If I ever get around to restoring my 70 Pepper Green on green car R/A III, 4 speed, I was contemplating Starlight Black, Atoll Blue or maybe even Polar White or Mint Turquoise. Interior change would be a given if the colour changes.

Personally I don’t mind the Pepper Green, but the market is better for a more desirable colour IMO.

My 70 ra3 4 spd A/c Judge is sierra yellow, technically one of the rarest colors for a 70 judge but it'll never bring close to a OO or Black car. That being said someone painted it cardinal red along the line and
I decided to go back to original, personally I like the yellow with the lime green stripes.

to address the question would the car bring more if I decided to paint it a more desirable color? My vote is that it is probably a wash, but at least my car isn't brown haha

I had a twin to that car 5 years ago Sierra yellow/sandal wood interior 4 speed with air conditioning and it had a frame off restoration. the car was killer from Arizona no rust ever when I took it to auction the 1st thing I heard every day was that's a beautiful car but it's not my 1st color choice and when people are spending 50 grand and up they always want their 1st color choice...

I happen to really like that color combo. would I have bought it new back in 1970 ??? probably depends on what kind of drugs I was doing. lol nowdays I find it cool to see the different color combos. I also get a little bit bored with the 69 carousel red cars just so many of them. even though all the 69 judges I have left are carousel red.

I also like the odd color 69 judges a lot too but at the end of the day the orange ones will always be more desirable because "Orange is the new Black"

Some clown painted an OO Judge with white. We had to change it back to OO.

Pain in the butt to repalce all the overspray hardware, and such to be nice.

Yes, a color change will devalue your car.

Respect the car and keep it original and correct.

If you do not like the color or option load of your Judge, do not change it ,sell it for a Judge that does.

A completely original Judge, usually a color change will hurt the value.
A Judge that is put together as more of custom or incorrect already (wrong drivetrain, upgraded suspension, painted stripes ect) Think a popular color would be beneficial.

Useless story
Anybody in the hobby back in the late 80’s will remember when all the muscle car dealers started popping up. All the cars on the lots were painted red.

Bought a 69 442 to fix up and sell at that time. Tell the paint store to send me a gallon of 69 or 70 Olds red. They send me 1970 Olds Rally red. Did not even look at the paint chips. I started painting it and Rally red looks similar to Carousel red. I stopped, look at the color chart, said O’well and kept painting.

Could not give that car away. Everyone that looked at it said – but it is orange!
