How is it SUPPOSED to be attached the console bezel? Right now its glued on.

And how do I get the shift knob off? I felt like I wanted to turn it but didint want to break it. I may have a better console. This one sucks.

Not sure Paul but I'd guess the bezel would be attached with screws from the underside. That's how the 4 speed bezel attaches to the console. Sorry but I can't help ya with the shift knob.

I do know Charles [OG 67] can tell ya.

Paul, the little silver part of the knob unscrews first & then the big black part unscrews next. The whole console will come off once the knob & screws are off.

Shifter Plate;
There were tangs on the bottom and it would just pop/snap into place.
Over time they can break off as is in your case.

Were the tangs part of the plate or the bezel? I don't have any of them.

They are small spring clips, sort of U-shaped and fit into the square shaped holes in the console. They have a hole in the end that attaches to the shifter plate pressed on to what looked like a rivit that was part of the cast. Had a problem with one of mine coming loose for years. Finally found a small enough screw, drilled a hole and used JB Weld in the threads. So far so good.

Seems like plates that are pitted have nice spring clips, and nice ones have missing clips. I fixed the one in my '64 the way that Barrierblue outlines.

I can't see the speedo but correct me if I'm wrong but those gauges aren't from a '66, looks like a '64 tach in the right hand pod.

You are right about the tach. I took it out this morning. The rest are from 66 as they are the same ones that were in my LEmans. I'd like to replace the tach with just a clock for now.

Mine is painted black. Is it supposed to be that way? All the ones that Ive seen available are not painted.

Since that 389 isnt running well, has a 2 barrel and looks pretty scraggly, I think I would look for a good running pull out 400,428 or 455. They are around if you keep a close eye on craigs list. I picked up a rebuilt 455 from carb to pan and fan to flexplate for $800 In St Louis a couple of years ago. Then clean it up, stick some new gaskets in it, paint it, stick it in and sell the 389. It could probably be done pretty cheap if you got a couple hundred out of your running 389. Just take some video of the 389 running with a temp and oil pressure gauge readings before you pull it. Just a thought.

Yes, should be black, not gloss, a satin type finish, just as the console is done.
