Default Start button options?

I ended up going with the ididit Pro-Lite in my 69 Firebird so now I need a start button solution.

My #1 concern is the right kind of button for what *I* want. I want to be able to push it once and it be the same as putting the key into the "on" position". Push it the second time and it crank the engine. Then the opposite, push to shutdown the engine, then again to turn everything off. I don't care about any other bells and whistles beyond just that specific button function.

Any ideas where I can get a start button setup like this? With the plug and harness hopefully.

Thanks!!

Alex

I think that switch would be made of un-obtainium. And you left out the "push again to disengage the starter" after "push it the second time to crank the engine". Don't forget that this switch has to pass quite a bit of current to activate the starter solenoid.

I've been in new cars that operate this way, so it can be done.

You don't need to "push again to disengage the starter". You are correct about the current, that's why most kits come with 40 or 60 amp relays in their control module. That allows you to use a very low amp switch and the relay module handles the higher amps in addition to the programming of what the switch presses do.

Anything is possible and I'm also open to commissioning a place to make me what I want as a one-off custom if need be. All the kits out there do everything except for the "push to shutdown the engine, then again to turn everything off". Most just turn everything off and I'm trying to avoid that.

I think you'll need a momentary pushbutton combined with either some relay logic, or a small microprocessor like an Arduino.

Use more buttons? Arcade machine buttons are available in a multitude
of colors, you could create a trick startup sequence that only you know?

That may be the key, and similar to what other kits use, but I'm no where near able to program an Arduino or a Raspberry Pi.

But that is exactly what the "new cars that "operate that way" are doing. The sequential button pushes are counted by the computer and transformed into doing the right thing.

I know zero about this guy, but he makes some pretty nice automotive electronics problem solver devices for reasonable prices. He has a 100% positive feedback and has host of positive reviews.

I'd be willing to bet he might be your man to make such a starter switch to your specification. It may be another item he can sell on E Bay too if it works out.

Maybe something to ponder getting in touch with him:

Hook it into an extra brake lite switch or use two buttons.

My Charger will only turn on the ignition power if your foot is not on the brake. Starter will engage if your foot is on the brake. How you wire this up I don’t know. May be an option to achieve what you want.

One button for ignition power and one for the starter (I would do two different colors) seems like a very easy solution

While that would be simple and functional, that's not really the direction I'm going for with this build.

I have seen tons of kits that operate how you mentioned you Charger does, but even they turn everything off when it push it while the engine is running.

Ass Monkey did a 1st gen Camaro for Sonic Drive In commercials. They used a start button and boasted how it was "Sonic Red". Maybe you can email Richtard at Ass Monkey or Aaron Kaufman at Arclight Fabrication and ask where they got one from. I would think you will get more info out of Kaufman. Dealing with Richtard would take a whole bottle of Tums.

You just need a button that aesthetically pleases you and a state machine that does exactly what you want it to do using that button as an input. I've done it all the time at work for similar applications using discrete transistor parts or a PLC setup. Which I'm sure the custom guy is going to do for you.
