Default Installing heater box question...

I am gonna attempt to remove the inner fender well and then install the heater box.

My question: is there any kind of sealant that needs to be install between the heater box and the firewall?

If so, what kind can be used?

Thanks

I have reinstalled a couple in the past and used a 3M product. It is called 3M Strip Caulk. Product number 08578. It is widely available and works well.

are you replacing your heater core? I was able to change mine without removing the inner fender. I used long extensions to go over the fender well to get to the last nut. It wasn't fun but not impossible.

Thanks, I had to order it, not in stock. I assume it has to go on both side of the fire wall.

Replacing the whole heater, blower, covers, etc... I have tried to install the blower fan and cover and can not get it in there, the fender is in the way.

were you able to remove just the inner fender - leaving outer fender in place? If so - how did you do it? I have to do Vintage Air soon and have been dreading this part of the project.

I recently went through this. It's not possible. At a minimum, you'll need to pull the fender away to make room for the inner fender to come out and when you do get the inner fender out, the fender will still be in your way. It's easiest and fastest to pull the fender and inner fender as one piece. You don't even need to take the tire off. I definitely recommend 2 people for this, to prevent bumping panels and chipping paint. The good news is that it's not as difficult as you think it will be. If you can get all the bolts broke loose without snapping any off, you'll be done faster than you think.

As said below, both have to come off, so I still have not done it yet.

I've seen inner fenders with trap doors cut in them that you can open and shut as needed. Before I restored my 69 it had a trap door on the inner fender.

Plus one on the butyl stuff. Works great and if you have to adjust or remove again it doesn’t dry. Easy to work with.

I made a ratchet system with a snap-on 1/4 ratchet, with pipe extension on the handle and then a wheel pully to turn and reach that upper fender wall nut. Worked like a charm. Trying to remember where I put it for a pic.
