Early production SD heads.
I have a pair of unassembled SD heads, Without the "16" casting mark.
Was curious what a fair market value would be? |

Mike, my understanding is there were four different foundries that made the 16 heads, and one of the foundries did not have the '16' in the casting molds. That doesn't make them any less valuable though. There should also be a date code on the heads.
You should post this question with the date codes listed in a thread called the "Super Duty Forum" here in the '70 - '73 tech. They can help you spot the value of these. Good luck with them.

The early production SD heads did not have "16" cast on the center exhaust ports.
The number "485215" is cast where the date code is normally found. There is no date code cast on these early heads. The early heads would only be "correct" on an early production SD car, built in May or June of 1973. They would be most valuable to someone with an early car missing the original heads. The value of any cylinder head depends most on condition. Assuming these are bare heads in good condition, I would estimate their value at about $1800 Hope that helps. |

As tmb's stated, these would be worth a bunch to the guy who is restoring an early 73 car and does not have heads. Way more than $1800.00 I suspect. To a racer or non restoration user, tmb's is probably correct. There is a lot of work left in those heads before they are ready to be put on any engine. The guides are junk when they're new so I would update those to current technology at the least.

Oddly, mine's an early SD. I'm the 6th T/A down the list in the registry and I do have the "16." I'd be curious to hear from someone with an early SD that does not have those cast in/

Slight thread hi-jack . . .
Were any of the non-"16" casting SD heads sold over the counter or used as SR heads, or were all used for production?

I should clarify that not all the early cars had these heads, just that these heads would only be correct on an early car.
For example, I have an early car with vin 136465 that has these heads, but I have seen other early cars with and without the early style heads. All 73 SD cars have casting dates that precede their production dates by at least six months. Lloyd, I can tell you that I bought a single NOS head without the 16 casting about 10 years ago. So at least one of them was sold over the counter. |

You did pull a low hand with that one, Toomany. I've got 137334. Thanks for clarifying though about the usage of the heads.

The over the counter pair that I bought WAY back in the day were 16 cast pieces.

I also bought a pair way back, I think in 1975 or 76. They were 16 cast, one was a Nov 72 date, the other was July 73.

Very cool! There wasn't much June gloom in '73!

I have a 16 on my heads and in fairly early. My car was mid-June assembly...

Both of my cars have date codes along with the casting number 16 on them and there both June cars.
My 2 cents, Brian |
