Tigers legend Al Kaline RIP

Never saw him play, but used to watch the Tiger games at my FIL's cottage in Michigan. He was play by play, with Ernie Harwell.

Started playing for the Tigers at age 18, right out of high school.

I remember him for his great throwing arm out of RF, pity the baserunner on 1st who instead of stopping at 2nd on the next batters single to RF tried to stretch it to 3rd. Half the time the ball was in the 3rd basemans' glove before the runner even started his slide. Mr. Kaline was a class act

Back in the day, the premier salary for a star baseball player was $200,000.00/ year.
The Tigers recognized that they had such a great player. They bellied up to the bar to give him $200,000 for the next year. He refused the contract, I believe he told them he wasn’t good enough for that amount of money. He did take the big contract a couple years later. Albert Pujols has been with the Angels since 2012, obviously not the great player he was with the Cards... still gets that 25 plus million per year, never complains.
