How can you tell the diference between different GM/BOP 12 bolt housings and also the years? I think I have Chevrolet housing, and there are bolts with nuts holding the backing plate. The cover has an upsidedown V shape on it. The stamped numbers are on the passengers side, on the opposite side of the cover. Placed as follows
CF 0 5 12 B
E
The only thing left in the housing is the driver side axel. What would be the cheapest route getting this put back togther. I need help verifing the year and type of 12 bolt. Any help would be appreciated

1965-67 chevelle
CF= 3;31 12 bolt posi chevelle
05= fifth month
12= twelve day
B = assembled Buffalo New York

Next Line
E = Eaton center section carrier

Axle tube fange to axle tube flange; 54 1/4"

1968-69 chevelle

Same as above with change in width of axle housing of; 55 1/4"
Also 68-69 will have a casting number of 3894939. I beleive this number will be in (one of the four webings in all four corners of the center housing facing the front). This is a web in the form of a T from top down to the axle tube insert--also axle tube insert to the bottom of the center housing and two more on the other side (pass or drivers). Always filled with grease and dirt. You will need a screw driver to clean it out.

On both the 65-67 and the 68-69 will be a date code of casting, also in one of the four webings. Usaully In the pass side in the lower webing facing the back under the tube.
A=jan B= Feb etc.
1= first day of week or 11= eleven day of the week
5=1965 6=1966 7=1967 8=1968 9=1969

example; D146= April the 14th of 1966

1970 Chevelle had a three letter code so I do not think yours is a 1970

1971 and 1972 had a two letter code again but all code letter and digits were all on one line not two lines as you showed. but it could if the letter O is instead a Zero

Rear end has 9" brakes.

This year at swap meets. Eaton posi center section are running about $250.00 to $325.00-----Ring pinion set $75.00 to $150.00-----Axle $40.00 to $65.00. 3;31 posi chevelle, monte carlo 12 bolt 68-72 Complete good used $375.00 to $550.00

There was 3 series carriers; series 2 used 2;73, and series 3 used 3;07, 3;31, 3;55, 3;73 and series 4 used 4;10, 4;56, 4;88.

Feel free with any more questions

thank you

Okay I found the others D277 and NF(above) 3894939(below). So its a 67 and I should no problems bolting this in.
My understanding all 65-72 a-body will bolt in, correct? Well I haven't seen a single one in the Ca swaps I've been too, or they sold quick. I'm still searching for a complete unit as well in bone yards, but they are very scarse in Ca. I was given this housing. From what I found since posted this , I think its a c-clip type, because of the bolts and nuts on the backing plate.
I'm looking to swap out the 10 bolt, I heard it won't hold up to a 400 4speed. I also want to put rear disc brakes on the car. I heard that some year caddilac and also ford explorer will bolt up? They did'nt know what years unfortunately or if they bolted to 10 or 12 bolts.
When I do swap the 4 speed, I was thinking of 3:07 or 3:31 because of all the hwy use.

Thank you, that was very helpfull!
