Default 72 Unitized Distributor Replacement

I have a complete 72 455 HO in my 73 trans Am, including the unitized distributor. I would like to replace the unitized unit. Does anyone know if a points distributor can be swapped in without changes to the harness? Or should I look for a HEI unit? Is the unitized a direct 12 volt system, no resistor wire or ballast? Thanks in advance for any guidance

Factory Unitized harness has no ballast resistor. Easiast would be to go to HEI.

You can also go to a set up with a stock points dist. & something like a pertronix unit & you won't have to change any thing because they work on the full 12 volts best. That way if you wanted it to look almost stock you'll have a dated dist to if you go that far & the only tell tail is the extra wire to the dist.

The 73 TA originally had the unitized distributor or the 72 engine has the unitized distributor?

I believe the 73 originally had a points setup. I will check what documentation I have. I know the last owner installed the 72 HO with the unitized distributor. Was thinking about the points and pertronix setup. Shaker had mentioned that route.

If the 73 was a points car originally, just use a points type replacement distributor.
(the TA would have a resistor in the wiring harness for the distributor)

To install a HEI, you will need a "pink" wire from the fusebox to the HEi. Year one sells it . has correct ends for dist, and fuse box.
As stated earlier, if you dont have this, easier to go points. You could have been running the unitized at low voltage too, and it could work..
Note: Last I knew Ames does Not have this... hence the YO reference
