The story of Schwinn is fascinating, from the beginning, up til they were bought out.

Never saw a Krate with Rear Disc Brake before - that is WILD. I don't remember anyone having a StingRay with springer front and fullsize front wheel either. WILD to see your purple StingRay springer. Great collection/selection you have . |

There were many cool options available on the Original Stingrays.
Different Shifters, Brakes, Seats, Tires, Speedometers and the list goes on. You could literally build your own Schwinn Stingray just as you could with a Pontiac automobile. The rear disc brake was a very late 1971 thru 1973 feature. I have a 4th quarter ‘71 disc unit. Schwinn dated every component. All shifter Krates came with the front “Atom Brake Drum”.

At least the Walmart knockoffs are sporting the "Pontiac" emblem.
All I had was a used bike with balloon tires. It was hell peddling that beast when I delivered newspapers.

Lol. That brings back memories. Pedaling my Cheater Slick with the hooks on the handlebars to hold my paper route bag. I did the Chicago Tribune and Sun Times Monday through Saturday mornings. Then the local free paper every Thursday afternoon after I got out of school.

Love this stuff.
My first "BMX" bike in the mid-'70s was a third-hand StingRay that I "converted" -- knobby tires, plastic fenders, flat black paint... Then I got lucky and when the older kid who lived across the street from me turned 16 and graduated to cars, he sold me his mint StingRay that he had converted when he bought it new with Scrambler heavy duty spoked wheels, tires, sprocket guard, and a few other doo dads. I never broke the frame, but the wheels, seat post, etc. got pretty bent up with all my big air jumps. I kept that Bike until I was in my 30s, and sold it to a bike collector friend who still has it. Should have kept it!

My family had the tradition of each sibling got a new bicycle on their tenth birthday. In spite of my Dad's meager salary, he always bought Schwinns because he knew they would last indefinately and we were taught to take care of things.
Picked out my bike a couple months ahead of time at the Schwinn dealer in St. Joseph Mich. It was a copper 26" 3-Speed. (same color as the StingRay posted at the top of the thread). I couldn't touch both feet on the ground and I almost dumped it the first time I took it down the street. A couple years after I had left home, my brother in-law asked me if he could have it for riding out in the country where they lived. I said sure. The last time I saw it was leaning up next to their goat shed about ten years after that. They moved away a couple years later and I'm pretty sure my old Schwinn was left behind. My two next younger brothers each got Stingrays. One was a Lemon Krate 5-Speed, which I'm pretty sure had a 20" front wheel w/fender. And the other was a regular Red Stingray that had a coaster brake with a 2-Speed rear hub. You changed gears by lightly 'kicking back' on the pedals. To this day, I've never seen another bike with that option. Granted I don't go around shopping for old bicycles. It also had a cheater slick on it. My youngest brother got a full size (27") 10-Speed for his first bike because they were just coming into vogue at that time. |

circa 1973
Here's a pick of me and my brother getting ready to head out on a boy scout bike-hike. He's on his Lemon Krate to the right and I'm the one with bed roll strapped to the front basket.
Not sure what the make of that green chopper on the left is, but it definately has a shorter wheelbase than the Stingrays. It looks kind of ungamely. |

I remember when we used to cut the front forks off scrap bikes and drive them on to the forks of our working bikes to turn them into choppers.

They’ve already ruined the Mongoose name by posting it on Chinese junk. We bought some Wal mart bikes for our younger daughters a few years ago, pedals broke, tires wore really quick and the paint faded overnight.
For car guys why not find a original and restore it instead ?

As the “Schwinn Reporter” states in July 1964 is when this New model was being introduced. This S/D model continued through 1966. The Famous “Yellow Oval” Slik also came out at the end of ‘64 and was available through 1966. My BA = Feb. 25, 1965 Lime standard has it’s dated UK* = United States Rubber Co. / K = 1965 / * = first quarter of year rear Slik. Chris
