2-1/2" American Thunder w. Thrush Welded 2 chamber mufflers. No H or X pipe.

https://youtu.be/oT9QVi6TadI

This was following a muffler shop install, I've since adjusted the tips and raised the tailpipes.

Here's mine; tri-y headers with a flowmaster a-body kit, H pipe, turn downs at the rear quarters behind the rear wheels and aerochamber mufflers..

Likes/dislikes are all subjective. Sounds on the web vary mostly from the recording device. Also variations occur depending on engine and exhaust parameters.
Years ago my first performance engine had Walker performance mufflers. I liked the sound and so did others, so I stuck with them.
Here's my recents:

406, KRE, HC-02, headers, full 2 1/4 exhaust (long story) , Dynomax 17733. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wvCB...ature=youtu.be

461, KRE, Stump Puller, long branch, 2 1/2 exhaust dump at rear, Dynomax 17734. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9UkaWe5504Y

I wish they still made the Walker Red Line Z muffler from the 1970's and mid 80's. It was a copy of the GM Turbo muffler and had a great sound with no resonating problems . I had them on my 1971 400 GTO and my 1969 Chevelle SS 396. Those mufflers had a beautiful sound without being too loud. Wish they had smart phones back then to capture the sound.

I just installed the Flowmaster FlowFX mufflers with H-Pipe and 2.5" piping.
Before I had Pypes Violator and they started to get on my nerves... too loud and not as deep sounding as I think the GTO should.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d1iAc0Ul8ss&t=1s

I also installed some Dynomax 3" tips. I wasn't sure if I should get 3 or 4" but in the end I'm happy I didn't get the larger ones.
Car is a 66 GTO with 462cui and a mild HR cam.

I replaced my flowmaster 40 series , log manifolds and compression bendt variable diameter non x-pipe exhaust with no tips.
To Pypes sgf11-R 2.5" full length exhaust and pypes hokeystick tips, also did change over to headman 1 3/4" primary full lengt headers.

The change was nigth and day from a bad drone at 2500-ish rpm to silent , no kiding it is silent i hear roadnoise, my rockerarms and the fuelinjectors. but under part throtttle and acceleration i hear the exhaust, at full throttle it is loud.
i am very happy with the pypes system

Short idle comparison:

Long branches, closed chamber heads, 1967 670 heads are some of the best. 2-1/2" pipes no X or H pipe, Porters right in front of the rear end with full tail pipes, nothing like it..

SD 496, Doug's Headers, 1 7/8" primary & 3" collector, 2.5 inch Flow Master American Thunder Series 2.5" mandrel bent system with Texas T/A Mufflers.
Sounds gnarly. Out does the sound of my RA IV '70 T/A.

I guess I gravitate toward that hollow, aggressive snarl. Sounds like the Porters, Texas TAs and maybe the 10s would be the ticket?

Would be a mild 400 with 2 1/2 inch exhaust (H or X), maybe RA manifolds...any recommendations that won't break the bank?

I have to agree Goat Roper your car sounds like a GTO should. REAL dual exhaust without the sound ruining X or H pipe,
