I think this is the best approach. Although I think the original hood probably could be fixed by a skilled fabricator, if the reproduction hoods are high quality (which sounds as though they are), I'd just get a new hood and keep the original stowed away.

There ain’t enough skill...rosary beads, sandals.....or magic wand to fix that rust riddled support.

And there lies the answer to the rust riddle. Maybe a flood car...sometime in its life...for that kind of rust ,in that hood support....who knows.
