Default 1966 421

I picked up complete engine this weekend. Taking it to the machine shop tomorrow to get the block and crank checkout. This is going to be for sale providing everything checks out. Looking for an approximate value. It's a YH block with 92 heads single four barrel. 4bolt main block. Looks to be standard bore right now.

$1500 if the block is standard bore and the crank is still standard on all the journals. If it had #93 heads instead of the #92 heads the value would be closer to $2k.

All 421 engines have 4-bolt mains.

Thanks Bart,

You answered a question I always wanted to ask, but always forgot to! ABout all 421s being 4 bolt mains!

Ironically mine goes to the machine shop tomorrow as well, but because I found some serious problems & since I bought it a couple of years ago, no recourse. Looks like some idiot had the crank cut 10 & used standard bearings. All 3 center mains spun & took the tabs off the backs. I am getting everything ready to leave for California or I would have checked the crank size myself, but now we will see what the shop says regardless. They will have some time to go over it while I am on the road.

It is a WG with 76 heads

God Bless
Bill

Got the block and crank back today. Block is good, needs to be bored .040 over. Crank is armasteel, needs .020 on mains and .010 on roads. I would guess this is about normal wear for engine this age?

Without knowing the history, perhaps. Most of the Pontiacs I've gone through needed a .030" overbore and .010/.010 on the crank, so yours has either been rebuilt once before or has had a bit harder service. Others with more experience will chime in. I've built a few Pontiacs, many here have built dozens of them...and more.

The block and crank are standard, bad ridge in cylinders require the .040 overbore and it looks like they wiped a bearing on the one crank journal.

Without a vehicle or mileage, impossible to accurately guess. From your description, it sounds like an honest, never rebuilt engine that has suffered wear from decades of use and is now in need of a rebuild. I've seen near identical mileage old engines vary greatly in condition: light usage and regular oil changes and tune-ups = little wear. (the 400 in my '67 GTO had no real ridge at 173,000 miles and the crank was fine). I've seen other engines that pulled a boat or a trailer, ran hot, and ran a long time between service intervals. Those engines showed more wear. Your 421 sounds like an easy re-fresh and will be a cool engine for somebody! It's my favorite 'big journal' engine.
