Default 389 VS. 400 valve cover clearance\Height

I just got my motor back from the shop and had told the machinist I would be running the 400 valve covers that were on the motor when I sent it to him. I now see i will be running the 64 389 Chrome valve covers.

Is there any difference in 389 VS. 400 valve cover clearance\Height.

Thanks,

Brian Jones

P.S. Just got the 26.6 Pound Bird in the oven.

Yes the 389 covers are lower. Are you using heads from a 389 or a 400? If they are 400 heads you could have problems.

I'm running the 1964 389 GTO heads with all new valve train from Comp cams including springs and Stamped steel rockers with the XE268 cam.

My Machinist was concerned about the clearance with the 400 Valve covers I sent him for the rebuild and said dont run anything lower.

Thanks.

A friend has early valve covers on his Edelbrock heads(ground off and painted) and needed a valve cover spacer for them and HS rockers

I use 389 valve covers on my 400 heads, you will have to use thicker gaskets or double up thinner ones. You will also need longer bolts.I have used Mr. Gasket Ultra-Seals with a Felpro rubber gasket glued to it.This gives enough room for a lift of 520.Of course different brands may be thicker/ thinner.

Should be fine if you aare running the '64 heads. Unless new valve train parts stick up higher than stock, it will work. If you use the later 400 heads, then you need a spacer. I've seen nice early valve covers with lots of little dents from the rockers due to this. If you can double the gaskets and get a good seal, then that will work (as long as you achieve the correct height).
