Hi Everyone -- I have a quick update for those following along. Sorry for the picture quality - my phone is getting old...

We did some fast and dirty exploration of the doors and fenders to see what is in store for us...And for once it was mostly good news.

The usual door dings and such - but most of the filler is there for no real reason. I was worried about the passenger door since there were 3 screws hanging out on the inside of the door.

The passenger side...

The drivers side...

The bottom of the drivers fender is kinda mangled - so Cam is going to fabricate a patch and splice it in.

Thanks for following along.

Looks like he's rolling along. Hopefully you can be in paint by the first of the year.

Muslcah -- A little freestyle abstract thing going on...I sure was glad not to see bondo laid over huge hammered areas.

Cardo -- Hopefully color is coming by spring. Funds in the piggy bank are getting a little shallow, so we can't do an all out push on this car. With any luck though I will be shooting the car into SPI epoxy soon. Going to take off the rest of the black primer and fix anything else we find. But trying to time that so the car doesn't sit in bare metal for very long.

Good to hear that the doors & fenders won't require much work! Always a relief when you get that kind of news. The fender patch should be relatively easy for your guy. Normally I'd recommend just buying a patch panel, but Ames says the quality of the patch panels for '64s is very poor. Better off just making it yourself by the sound of it.

Thanks ZeGerman...i know you know the feeling of finally getting good news. With regard to the patch...Cam already had it fabricated - I just forgot to take a picture. If you want to see some of his cool and more difficult work check out his Instagram https://www.instagram.com/imperialkustom/?hl=en

Hi Everyone...

Here is some more of Cam's handiwork (and his hands, haha). Working on replacing the lower portion of the drivers fender. As many of you know the patch panel for this area is very poor - so he fabricated one instead.

The panel was built in two pieces - using the passenger side as a reference. Here are some pictures of the process and almost finished result.

Thanks for following along...

Hi Everybody -- Thanks for following along.

After a little break - we are finally back to working on the '64. Sometimes slow downs just can't be avoided.

But at this point Cam is working on all the little things before buttoning up his end of things. The list at this point (barring any new "discoveries") is minor straightening, filling a few holes, and finishing one last patch panel.

First up...Here are some pictures of the final lower fender patch. Some of the fabrication process is pictured above.

This fender will get a few more ding repairs and have the holes from the Lemans/Tempest displacement badge at the nose welded shut.

Cam is also addressing the only rust we found on the car, which was in the area of the body where the tail panel and floor come together and the fuel tank filler comes through.

Here is the before picture...

And the patch in progress...

Some other work has been done too - like straightening of some damaged metal, filling small holes, etc.

Once the rest of the list is buttoned up, it will be shot with epoxy primer. Then I have to get to work.

Thanks for reading. Comments and advice are always appreciated.

Looks good. Glad to see you're still moving along. Your metal guy is amazing! The road to restoration is long, but well worth the wait.

Thanks Cardo -- Cam is certainly top-notch, and I would rather have straight metal than a bunch of filler. He is a one-man shop - so sometimes the car is just waiting for its next turn at bat.

Going back to the beginning of this project, sometimes it doesn't seem like much has changed. But that is just an illusion...I think the new primer will bring home just how far we've come.

Thanks everyone for following along. The support here helps to keep me inspired.

For everyone following along here is the next update...The replacement metal for the area with the rust shown above is finished. To my eye it doesn't even look like a repair.

And because this is my car...and consistent with my motto "Nothing is Ever Easy"...We found a problem when addressing the aftermarket A/C holes in the firewall. We knew the firewall had some filler in it - but thought it was just smoothing the factory dimples and such.

Instead it was hiding another hammered area...You can see some rough repairs in the upper portion. Another weird bit of damage since the cowl portion behind it is straight.

This is the garbage that got cut out...

And the new patch for the lower section. Cam will also make a patch to fix the hammered upper section.

At least we are getting to the point that nearly every part of the car has been down to bare metal...so damage is running out of places to hide.

Thanks for following along - as always your comments are appreciated.

Hi MUSLCAH -- I bought the car in Las Vegas. The previous owner got it in So. Cal. around Whittier. It delivered new to Schappe Pontiac in Madison, Wisconsin. I think it also spent some time in Adams County, Colorado in the mid-1980s.

Dang ....with that pedigree....one would think the firewall would be rust free ...

Hi MUSLCAH -- I think I see what you are looking at there. But thankfully the firewall appears to be rust free. Here are a couple more views...

The top of the firewall is beat and patched. I can't figure out how the damage that was "repaired" in the past happened. Maybe they accidently dropped the engine on it...or a tree fell on the car...whatever happened was pretty localized.

Thanks for following along.

Hi MUSLCAH -- No doubt. Certainly this poor car got stacked up a bunch between '64 and '87/'88 (when it got taken apart). I wish somebody had taken the hammer away from a couple of "body guys" though - at least one person did more harm than good.

Because I can be something of a nerd...and it helps me visualize the progress I made this graphic of the damaged areas on the goat. Oddly depressing and impressive seeing it all laid-out like that. At least 3 serious collisions to my eye.

Thanks again everyone for following along - and keeping me inspired. It is a long road...

This is one heck of a project. Lesser men would have turned away. I tip my hat to you for saving a classic and sharing with the Forum. Well done.

Thanks tempest1964 -- I'm glad to have a forum to share this adventure with. I know that so many people here have managed great restorations - and I certainly draw inspiration from build threads like Ron Cozzo's and Dick Boneske's. Hopefully, this one will inspire others to take the leap (rather than scare them away).

I can't claim it is a rational decision - but despite the challenges, something made this car the right one for me...

Thanks to everyone here for building this great forum and atmosphere. I am glad folks are following along with this project.
