Related. Hard to trust tach readings unless verified, "6000" rpm on a factory tach could well be 5500 actual. I have a AutoMeter tach mounted in my dash and recently found it inaccurate while installing my new port fuel injection system. Found out while programming the ECU when the program readout indicated the tach was reading low.

I figured out that a few years ago my tach reads about 300 rpm high over 5000 rpm.

Thanks ! The 15 year old Continental still works well. I think this is now the 4th engine combo it has been behind. I know I've been tempted in the last few years to swap to a 3800 to 4200 stall convertor and 3.42 gearing..but this is too much fun!

Maybe you can test one of the units that Cliff is now selling, and report back to us. I'd buy your old one...

I used to shift mine after the second tach bounce...then had a custom stock looking 8k tach made... and built a 4" stroke engine so I could watch it buzz to 7200.

Is the 8 for initial? What is your total?

I have to run 16 initial + 22 for my older E-Heads. The newer head chambers must be much more efficient.

31 degrees total,Yes the KRE chambers are known for low total timing most fall between 28 and 32.

"canton 400 oil pan with an oil temp sender"

What's the ideal oil temp? And what brand/viscosity oil?

From what I have read I'm in a good range of 190 to 210 for oil temps.I ran a 10/40 dino oil on breakin for 150 miles. I just switched to 10/30 Synthetic which can see higher temps and not break down.
An added bonus with the oil temp gauge I can insure the oil is warmed up before a dragstrip pass.

Reading your break in procedure, etc, I predict that your motor will outlast mine

I know the shortblock is well built..actually well built may be an understatement. I've never had ring seal like this shortblock has and it should maintain it. My last 2 engines you could always smell a bit of gas in the oil with my crappy tuneups. As much as I didn't like the idea of a hardblocked engine I'm really starting to see the advantages.

I've heard Jim Butler speak at least a couple of times at tech seminars at the Pontiac Southern National event in Dallas. He spoke of very favorable things that hard locking can do for an engine. This was likely pre 2001. His Pontiac knowledge and business sense were both outstanding. His boys have a lot to be thankful for. Their Dad set a top notch example for them to follow!!!
