I'm going to need one of those with battery power, too.
Have a couple of older corded electric ones that still do good work, but going to need longer range.

EGO has one in their 56Volt line of tools so that would be good to have one that will swap batteries with the EGO chainsaw. It says it can handle ~up to~ 1" cuts.

If i/we get another stimulus check - i'll be getting one of those.
Or might write to Santa this year

I'll have to check on one of those hedge trimmers.
One thing they are great for down here with the Spanish moss is they will cut right through that stuff without clogging up. (also the vines too)
With the chain saws they always threw the chain off or really jammed up.

Default Along those lines...

I have the older Craftsman version of this machine and it rocks! It actually is something "That works" plus I bought one of these off CL for $200. guy said he got lots of calls but when I said I would pay his price without question he said Sold! These things are not cheap and this one was near perfect. Sure saves a lot of raking.

Default Mo Trail Clearing

Continued clearing the same trail. I used the Kioti, 12" Kobalt, & pruning shears. TJ used the Dewalt hedge trimmer & long handle limb loppers.

Everything was going real quick, 'til we came upon 3 big pines that had blown across the trail. Didn't measure 'em. But one looked to be between 16" & 18". And one tree lay across the other 2.

The 18" Kobalt would have cut 'em. But it would have taken 6 cuts, in order to make chunks the Kioti would roll.

A quick assessment revealed that it would be MUCH quicker & easier to just go around. After cutting just a few very small saplings, the Kioti & bush hog made a new trail detour thru the cut-over, which was only a few feet to the West of the main trail. Didn't really need to cut anything in the cut-over. The Kioti made the trail. By that time, it was hot, I was tired, & the skeeters were bad.

So, we called it a day. Part of that trail has some wet spots. So, have to use 4WD to get thru it. Thankfully, TJ's horse has full time 4WD. They go thru stuff I wouldn't even attempt.

I'll stick with my gas saws, but I'm glad the electric stuff worked out for you.

Default One Mo Day

Went back Fri morning to finish up that trail. Was cloudy, therefore a lot cooler. Used a little Deep Woods Off, this time. Got-R-Done & were back home by noon.

TJ got a satellite view & marked in red the trails we cleared this week.

Pretty easy to tell where the mowed grass is, the heavily wooded areas, & the areas that are recent cut-overs.

Default A Few Wet Spots

Yeah, we encountered some wet spots along this trail. And, after making 3 trips in & out, over portions of it, the ruts began to get rather deep.

4WD pulled us right on thru all the spots, except one. I'd noticed that we'd made some ruts in that spot. But, the first 2 times thru it & back, the Kioti pulled right on thru.

BUT, on the last trip out, it seemed to break thru the top layer & got down to soft, wet, Louisiana gumbo mud. Had it in 4WD, with the rear wheels locked together. But, instaed of pulling on thru, as it had been doing, this time it got to a certain point, stopped moving forward, & just started down.

Well, thank God the Kioti had a loader ! Had to use the loader bucket to help pull us along, just a foot or 2 at a time. It wasn't looking too good, there for a while. I thought we might have to resort to the nuclear option, to get out. I'd watched my Dad use it lots of times, to get his old 2000 Fords un-stuck. None of his tractors ever had a loader. So, they got stuck easily.

Anyhow, the loader helped us inch ahead til we came to a little knoll. There, the bucket got a good bite of solid ground & pulled us out of the bog.

A couple of places along the trail actually LOOKED worse. But, we just made some fairly deep ruts & kept moving. However, I won't try going back thru that one bog 'til it dries out, next summer.

Default Kobalt Recall

I just registered my 40v 12" chainsaw & 40v 8" pole saw at the Kobalt recall center.

The lady said they'd just send out a new body for each saw, & all I'd have to do is swap my bar & chain over to the new units.

Haven't had any problem with either saw. Used the chainsaw some yesterday. Worked great.

Noticed that Lowes no longer sells a Kobalt 40v 12" chainsaw. I suppose they've replaced it with the 14" brushless model. I thought about buying one, without a batt. But, they're $150 + tax. And, they don't have a brake.

I'm doing a LOT of research on cordless chainsaws. Watching videos & reading reviews, by pros & owners.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnFfaoFRrUE

Wanna get something with a bit more power than my 12". I'll save the 18" Kobalt for big stuff, & let TJ use the 12". Need a medium power model for stuff up to maybe 12" or so.

So far, the cheapest one I'm considering is the WEN 16". With batt/charger, it's about $160 + Tax.

https://www.amazon.com/WEN-40417-Lit.../dp/B0711Z1VSX

The most expensive one I'm considering is an Echo 58v.

Really looking close at the EGO CS1401. Have read that the EGO batts are supposed to be better than most others. Don't know.

I just picked up my EGO 14" 56Volt [CS1401] chainsaw today from Lowes.
Had to order it into the store.
Can tell you i already like it way better than any other 14" i looked at - (or ones i bought and returned).

The ergonomics and balance are superior.
And the safety button/trigger lock that you have to push with your thumb as you hit the trigger is in the right place.
Construction seems superior too.
Plus its weatherproof, Oregon bar & chain, and 56V vs. 40V
6800 rpm

I didn't like the colors at first, the grey body is probably going to show ugly sooner than red green or blue, but its a chainsaw anyway.

They also just got in stock - in store - the EGO 18" chainsaw.
Going to check it out closer - maybe bring one home - and compare it against the 80V 18" Kobalt ... who knows, the Kobalt might go back.

It is rated at 11,000 rpm - and it has an LED HeadLight !

I bought a 10% Off Coupon for Lowes on eBay for $5
Printed it out and saved $25 on the EGO [$20 after paying $5 for the coupon itself]

The link you posted for the EGO says it weighs around 18.3 lbs ? lol
Package weight 21 lbs

Just weighed my saw - with battery charged/installed = 11.5 lbs (no oil)
Lowes site says 11.4 lbs

" I just picked up my EGO 14" 56Volt [CS1401] chainsaw today from Lowes..."

Please post a detailed review of it, pros & cons.

Thanks !

I really think I'd like to have the Echo, mainly because it cut faster than anything else, on the video I linked. It really smoked everything else, including the high priced, big name saws. They also chose it as the best value of those tested. But the Ego made the most cuts, by far.

That part of the test begins about the 5:30 mark. Gonna watch the whole video again.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fnFfaoFRrUE

Noticed that the Greenworks had some good scores, except for being the loudest. Gonna look it up. I think I noticed that it was a 60v Pro model. May be out of my price range.

Looks like the 16" 60v Pro may have been discontinued. I did find some 16" 80v models. They're $280 + tax at several vendors. $270 + tax @ Tractor Supply.

oooo my favorite flavor ! number of cuts per charge

I had a GreenWorks Pro 16" 60V for $149 Clearance and returned it.
Decided it was too close in size and weight as the 18" Kobalt to make good enough reasoning to keep it. I needed something to go up in the trees with as my #2 saw.
Then limbing/trimming/smaller ground work.
It will get the most use overall.

My buddy kept his GW 16" and he likes it just fine.
The price made it hard not to keep it , but i really needed 14".

Now they have Gen II GreenWorks, and it's probably same price range as the Echo.

If i were in the 16" market and $350 range i would pick the EGO first.
Then next tier would probably be the Echo, Ryobi and DeWalt.
DeWalt would be hard to resist but their warranty period sucks.
Echo doesn't list warranty period on the battery, just the tool.
I would caution/investigate that factor first.
GreenWorks has the longest battery warranty 4yr tool/4yr battery.

Knowing what i know now , bottom mount battery is a big perk.
More Weatherproof
I think EGO and Ryobi are about the only ones that are not drop top battery.

You can't really go wrong with any of the ones you are considering. imo
How they feel when you pick them up can make a difference too, hopefully you get a chance to see them all in person first.

Some of the chainsaw videos are good & some aren't.

Seems like most of 'em, especially if the guys are young, have this ridiculous LOUD heavy metal music playing.

Here's a few of the Echo.

I thought this video of the EGO was good. It explains the importance of using a higher Ah battery. Usually, as the Ah of the battery goes up, so does the price of the saw.

I mentioned the Greenworks Pro 60v. Did a bit more research on it. It seems that there is a new one which they call a gen II. They claim it has more power. Noticed that it does have steel bucking spikes, which most batt saws I've been lookin at don't.

https://www.protoolreviews.com/tools...-review/29129/

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mjpKqHWpYo8

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KAZJWWd4suU

Looks like the model # of the previous model was 2014502.

https://www.toolboxbuzz.com/lawn-gar...ainsaw-review/

Model # for the gen2 is CS60L212.

Seems that this model is out of stock @ Lowes @ at Greenworks. Don't know if there have been problems with it, or they just can't keep up with demand.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Greenworks-...ery/1001034570

I think the model number for just the bare saw is CS60L02. Those look to be available.

https://www.lowes.com/pd/Greenworks-...nly/1002928028

https://www.homedepot.com/p/Greenwor...B&gclsrc=aw.ds

https://www.amazon.com/Greenworks-Br.../dp/B083JNVRRC

There are lots of Greenworks 60v batts & chargers on Ebay. The 4.0 Ah batts are quite expensive. There is a 5.0 Ah generic brand for less. Appears that quite a few guys are selling the 2.0 Ah batt that comes with their Greenworks tool, buying a larger one, then trying to sell the smaller one on Ebay.

My 14" EGO is Gen2 with 2.5Ah battery.
The battery MFG. date is July 2020 and it does have a "fuel gauge" built into it.

The 24" EGO Hedger i got also came with a 2.5Ah battery
But it's battery is MFG. date June 2020 - and it DOESN'T have a "fuel gauge".
I agree with the guy in the video that a fuel gauge is really beneficial.

So if anyone is looking at EGO equipment - check the battery date to be July 2020 or newer. Or - just push the power check button on the end of the battery - if only the power button illuminates - it Does Not have a fuel gauge.
The fuel gauge battery has 5 other LED's surrounding the power check button - and 1 or more of the surrounding indicators will illuminate when you push the power button.

Already worked a deal where they are swapping me a new design 5Ah battery for the old design battery.

The 16" and 18" saws are all Gen2 and automatically come with a 5Ah battery , with fuel gauge.

The 14" Saw and 24" Hedger is where you really need to check which battery is in the box.

Another couple tid-bits on EGO

The boxes are not tape sealed at factory. That means you can open the box and inspect the battery to see if it has the fuel gauge, without creating a conflict with a salesperson for "breaking the seal".

The 14" and 16" saws are the exact same saw assembly, other than the 16" is 2 inches longer AND it comes with the 5Ah battery vs. 2.5Ah on the 14".
Unless you "need" to have the 14" - the 16" is a little better value for $50 more to get the 5Ah battery. It also weighs about 2 pounds more than the 14" (some of that will be due to bigger battery weight - and the rest for the longer bar/chain)

I really like the chain adjustment mechanism.
The big knob un-tightens/tightens the bar
Then a separate "star wheel" located above the big knob - dials the bar tighter or looser.

The 18" is a different saw all by itself, and the chain adj mechanism is different too.
It is rated at 11,000rpm - where the 14/16 is rated 6800rpm
Those are the motor shaft speed, not chain speed.
I might go play with one in the store - or bring one home and play with it.
But it's unlikely i will trade-in the Big Kobalt 80V for it.
Got way too good of a deal on the Kobalt and i doubt they would haggle down to that price zone on the 18" EGO - it is $350.
14" = $250
16" = $300

For whatever reason - Lowes doesn't offer the 16", only 14 and 18.
Home Depot seems to offer the 16
Don't forget about 10% Coupons on eBay for Lowes and Home Depot if you don't have direct access to any of them.
Some of them are only usable In-Store , so pay attention to that.

"...Already worked a deal where they are swapping me a new design 5Ah battery for the old design battery..."

Just out of curiosity, who are the "they", in this "deal" you "worked". And exactly what does this deal involve ?

Also wondering how you get by "test driving" so many saws, then returning them. ??? Are you good friends with some of the employees ? Or, can anybody just try as many saws as they like, then return all those they don't wanna keep ?

All the saws I'm considering can be ordered & shipped. But so far, I haven't found any which are in stock at any stores in my area.

I remember taking "test drives" in lots of trucks I was thinking of buying. But, I can't see myself buying a new chainsaw, using it, then returning it, because I found another model I wanna try. But, it sounds like a great way to find just exactly the saw you like. If you can get by with it, it sounds like a great system !

I'm guessing that if I pay for a NEW saw, then when I open the box discover that it has been used, THEN I'd take it back. Now, if they tell me that somebody tried it, only used it a very little, offer me a much lower than new price, AND offer full NEW saw warranty, THEN I might consider it.

"...Don't forget about 10% Coupons on eBay for Lowes and Home Depot if you don't have direct access to any of them.

Very interested in this. Never heard of buying a coupon, in order to get a store discount. Please provide more info/links/etc. I'm especially interested in any discount I might could get on items that have to be ordered.

I get the 10% vet discount from Lowes, & even got it at HD recently. BUT, it doesn't apply to ALL in-store items. They say it doesn't apply if the item is "on sale". Well, since they sell most larger items cheaper than other stores, they post the list price, then say the item is "on sale", even if it's their everyday price on the item. This happened to me a while back, at Lowes. When the cashier rings up the item & tries to apply the vet discount, the computer will tell her if it can apply to that item, or not. When I questioned her, she said that LOTS of higher priced items were that way.

The 10% discount is worth $30, on a $300 item, so it's definitely worth considering. It will at least pay the tax.

Has anybody here been able to apply their vet discount OR a coupon discount on items ordered thru Lowes or HD ? Could it possibly be applied if you go to one of the stores & have them order the item for you ???

Well, this may answer one of my questions. "...Note: The Lowe’s military discount policy applies to online purchases at Lowes.com..."

According to the info on this site, the vet discount can apply to online purchases at Lowes, but NOT HD. I can NOT verify this info, right now. But, I'll do some more research. If true, I'll definitely consider ordering thru Lowes.

The PY Online Forums is the largest online gathering of Pontiac enthusiasts anywhere in the world. Founded in 1991, it was also the first online forum for people to gather and talk about their Pontiacs. Since then, it has become the mecca of Pontiac technical data and knowledge that no other place can surpass.
