In the RA III 400 that we just built with the 2802, we used the standard A-0951 Hylift-Johnson lifter that we purchased from Paul K, a member here, he is a dealer. They are quiet as a mouse so far too, no signs of any kind of ticking, even on the initial startup, but we did pump the engine up before we fired it. The last thing a person wants to do is lose a lobe during break-in due to an inferior, soft, offshore lifter. That's makes for alot of expense and headache over buying the better lifters the first time around. We also use a full bottle of Comp Cams break-in additive along with conventional Quaker State 10W30 to break in all of our flat tappet engines. After a 30 minute break-in, the oil and filter are changed, and we add another bottle of the Comp Cams break-in additive, until the first 3k mile oil change, after that its just the oil of customers choice, and no longer use the additive.

The extra additive isn't needed with the Gibbs break-in oil. It has plenty of additive already in it.

Cool, sounds like your plan is coming together well. I will be following along...

LOL I knew that was going to be the reason. Everyone blames the beer virus for everything now. It's getting ridiculous.

Maybe you'll have better luck with another cam company. Fingers crossed.

Comp lifter
That must be an older Comp lifter in your picture... The metering disk having 4 holes and the ring just below the oil band is almost a dead giveaway that it is a reboxed, standard A-0951 Hylift-Johnson lifter. Hylift-Johnson used to supply Comp with lifters years back. I believe some have said that Delphi is supplying Comp Cams with their lifters nowdays.

Default springs

well I borrowed a install height mic and came up with 1.690

also found a spring weight tester and with the springs that are currently installed I checked them at the installed height of 1.690 and the compressed length of 1.200

124lbs at 1.690
294lbs at 1.200

not sure if im doing this correctly I made marks on some tape with a pen and a dial caliper from the base of the unit??

That figures out to be a 347 springs rate. Comps 995s are rated at 402. Springs vary on their pressure, if the test was correct that is on the low side for a Comp 995. More what you would expect from one of the comp 994 spring after some use.

You about have to check everything anymore, QC is all on the user end these days.

2802 should be a good cam.

I would run them. I would check at least one more to see if they vary much.

"...some have said that Delphi is supplying Comp Cams with their lifters nowdays."

Real easy to spot a Delphi lifter. Unless they have changed recently, they have a "hardened foot". Therefore, they will have a thin groove, very near the bottom, where the foot is joined to the main body.

Problem is that you can't be sure that the lifters that you'll get in the box will be the same lifter that is pictured in an online ad. Sometimes the lifter pictured is not even close to the lifters you'll get in the box.

Check out the pics for all these different lifters. Some have no grooves at all. Some have 1 groove above the oil band. Some have 1 groove just below the oil band. Some have 2 grooves just below the oil band. Then some show pics of the Delphi lifter, with the thin groove near the bottom. And, there are at least 3 different retainer types. But who knows what will actually come in the box.

You can buy stroker assemblies with dish pistons.

https://butlerperformance.com/i-3164...tegory:1459543

You can buy 'em with 4", 4.21", 4.25" stroke & even bigger.

https://butlerperformance.com/i-2445...tegory:1459542

Forged crank & Ross dish pistons cost extra. Most do NOT recommend an Eagle cast crank.

https://butlerperformance.com/i-2459...tegory:1459542

How about a ready to assemble short block kit ?

https://butlerperformance.com/i-2445...tegory:1234783

OR, if you live anywhere near OK, you might wanna consider a short block from Len Williams. I'm sure he can add forged crank & dish pistons, for an extra fee.

Be careful messing around with multiple keyway timing sets. You MUST align the correct mark on the lower gear with the dot on the upper gear if you move it from the standard keyway. Most are well marked, Circles, Triangles, Squares for the 3 keyway variety. Early Rollmaster sets were not marked and they are confusing even when they are marked on each keyway. The instructions they used to send with them didn't help much either.

If memory serves me correctly if you move it from the "dot to dot" or zero position to another keyway you need to move straight up to the closest tooth, then back two to the left as the new point to align with the top sprocket mark. ALWAYS re-check ICL or the intake open point after each movement.

The Cloyes iron sprocket 3 keyway sets and not really any sort of "upgrade" and they will stretch out pretty quickly from what I've seen here. Even the top shelf billet sets with the expensive imported double roller chains stretch out a pretty good amount if you are putting a lot of street miles on the engine. I knocked one clear out of my first 455 build in 4 years of daily driving and racing the car as many times as I could get it to the track every week.........FWIW.......Cliff
