Help me decide.... Spoiler or Not?
Please help! I can argue my car with a spoiler and not, depends on the day. I need to decide, I do have a spoiler (and trunk rod), and hope to get in paint shop in a few months. As FYI, it will be de-vinyl top & de-side molded.

Its your car to do as you please. Personally I think you are making a wise decision to get rid of the vinyl top. They just don't look right on firebirds. They also rust the roof out. The spoiler looks right on these cars. They look naked without one. With that being said, I wish I never put a spoiler on my GTO even though its a real judge spoiler I found in the 80,s. I was young and thought it was a good idea. Now I think they should only go on Judges. Too late. The holes are there now. If I ever repaint the car the spoiler will be removed and the holes filled.

Spoiler on 2'nd gen f bodies. No spoiler on a bodies. Unless it is a real Judge.

I had this same debate with myself about my Formula. It's kind of unique in NOT having one, but on OTOH I just really think the spoilers complement these cars so well that I'm going to put one on when it gets painted.

I think a spoiler ruins the flow of the beautiful body lines on the second gen F body.

Spoiler most definitely. looks like somethings missing without one. just makes an already nice car look nicer.
looks like a frog from behind without one. just squattin in the grass...…….. |

I'm going to say it depends on the color. Something subtle? No spoiler.

Tough call. I decided not to go with a spoiler on my pro-touring ‘70 Formula. I know it sounds silly given that everything on the car will be updated, but I wanted to maintain simplicity and the spirit of a ‘70 Formula. That said, I’m having a rendering done and may change my mind after I see it!

Generically.... spoilers look fine on '72s. They only look wrong on '70s.
If I had your car, though, I'd ditch the bodyside moldings, keep the V-Top, and leave it spoilerless (especially if the flat hood is staying). But it's yours - so whatever will make you like it the most!

I would add the spoiler- it really finishes off the car and completely changes the look

Looking back on my 79 Formula, if it didn't have a spoiler I would have added one. The 2nd generation Firebirds don't look right without one. But.. It's your car, adding one or not is up to you. Just so you know, I voted Yes add one.

I'm quoting this, because I think he put it very well:
Quote:
... but if you've decided to ditch the viyl roof, it's your call. I really like the side stripe, for some reason I thought you had that!? I agree that colour plays part in the spoiler versus no spoiler; I used to prefer the spoiler, and much like 'Judge3' I used to think it looked like something was missing without it. On the other hand these days it seems as though every single second gen f-body has one, so not having one will set you apart. I vote spoilerless with a nice OE style dual exhaust. (shared because, like yours this one is silver.)

Something about the way it looks with the black vinyl top says a spoiler doesn't belong on it.
Not sure if a '70 1/2 Z28 spoiler would not look out of place though. (read: subtle) |

There's already tons of spoilers and Formula/T-A clones at shows, but you rarely see a nice, clean base Firebird sans spoiler, let alone with a vinyl top. I would keep it as is with the vinyl top and molding.

The answers to your questions are all over the board, literally.
We added the 3 piece spoiler and removed the vinyl top on my wife's Camaro, so obviously you know our opinion. You need to decide what you want, do it and never look back. |

I prefer no spoiler or vinyl top... Less is best on a hot car...

The rear of the 2nd gens look unfinished without the spoiler. I added one to my 1973 Formula 455 recently. I just couldn't stand to look at it anymore..
