1 - The last time I reworked one of these was on the original in my 1st '78 T/A back in the '80s. All had cardboard base, w grey foam layer and then non-cloth (vinyl?) perforated headliner material. This was back when you could still purchase an complete correct color match, mounted on backer (cardboard) OEM from GM. I remember seeing those huge ship boxes that contained the 1 piece headliners. IIRC the shipping costs $ was high and due to size shipped truck freight only.

2 - I recall removing the vinyl, and then the remaining foam from the cardboard. I used a 3M adhesive spray can specific to the job (gorilla snot yellow) that indeed instructed to "light spray" both mating surfaces and allow to dry until "tacky" and then join them together.

I recall folding the headliner vinyl in 1/2 (front to back) and spraying and installing 1/2 @ a time...clamping the edges to prevent slippage...

Yes, that is the way to do it, expect if you use foam, joann fabric$22, don't clamp it or use your fingers to smooth it out. Use your palm lighty or you will have finger dents in your headliner. And you want it to be warm out.

When I did my 78 with Camel no one had the color, Year one was real close, it's a shade off and looks correct because nothing matched from the factory, you see cars at that silly firebird show in that Ohio parking lot where the interiors looked they were dipped in a large vat, all matching, but in 80 the camel is a lighter shade as well, I have some original pcs to prove it, it's diff lifter than the 1978. And you can't spay a headliner with out it looking like poo poo. All the little hole would have over spray in it. I still haven't seen any head liners close, that goes for package trays too, I recently bought an nOS camel package tray from the Trans Am Reaper, can't wait to put it in.

Exactly. It's those pesky details to keep it from "looking like poo-poo" eh?

Would you be interested in posting a few detail pictures of this? Really curious as I haven't seen one yet.

Thanks, 68RT

Can a complete headliner be purchased? board and material?

Not sure I still have my original board...my original sure didn't last long.

your right, the repo mats are a lighter shade of camel. Better than nothing.

I also order two repo arm rests for the T/A and I was sent a set for a corvette, I'm sending them back. Totally different design and no mention of the arm rest being a corvette item.

Looks like the darker one

I was thirteen when this car was new, so a shade off isn't going to kill me.

It does look good in the car with the camel trim surround

The rug colour is also a shade off

I should have bought a blk on blk car
