Default '68 Disc Brake Spindles

Question:

Can the front disc brake spindles used on the 1968 GTO with 4 Piston Calipers, also be used with the '69 and later Single Piston Calipers? I know the caliper mounting brackets are different, but are the spindles the same, and if they are not, can they be used with both the single piston and four piston calipers?

Agree - when I swapped from 4 piston calipers to single piston, I used the same spindles.

Can you explain why you switched to the Single Piston caliper?

A lot of people switch because the 4 piston ones are expensive and some have a tendency to leak.

Exactly. I had mine sleeved and they still leaked. I couldn’t find replacement seals, rotors, or pads at the time so I swapped to single pistons.

BUT...when they did NOT leak they had terrific stopping power! Look at today's high-performance brake calipers for a clue. All high perf cars have minimum 4-piston calipers and Porsche just unveiled 10 piston calipers...

even more stopping power when they did leak ....
balded a brand new GFG radial TA in a panic stop on the way to the Rolling stones and J geils band
concert ... October '81
with a leekee right front that locked up under a panic stop ,, at 65 mph ,, what a wobbly ride home on the freeway ...
I love my manual 4 piston discs .... and 4 speed ...

If I remember right, the biggest issue with the original 4 piston calipers is that they aren't a floating design so when rotors and pads go out of spec bad things happen easily.

FWIW, I'm now running a Wilwood two piston caliper and like them quite a bit.

Yes, the four piston calipers DO NOT float like the Single Piston design.
I think that the four piston design should have more stopping power.

Can you get a modern version of the four piston caliper that does not leak that can be used with the original 14" Rallye II Wheels Stamped JA? If so, that would be the way to go in my humble opinion.

Would this hold true for the 67 four piston spindles, or are they different from 68?

They made the four piston calipers in 67? I thought 68 was the first year.

Yes, they did. I know two people who have them and have seen both cars.

Shame they never sorted them out properly, they were ahead of their time as far as performance.

I remember there was some company doing high-end rebuilds on them, SS sleeves, better pistons and seals ... wasn't cheap though.

Many versions of the GM factory 4piston '67 & 68 oem usage calipers.
-A body
-Camaro/Nova
-impalla
-Firebird
-a few other obscure versions, out in the shop, have a pair along with stamped mtg brackets off a '68 Toronado. Performing a high end restoration, the correct pieces can be a ton of fun to track down & restore.
