Is the engine color on 71 the same as 70? On a 71 455HO is the aluminum intake painted or bare aluminum? Does anyone know the number for the correct paint, maybe I could pick up a spray can at the local parts store.

1966 through 1970 engines were painted a metallic blue-silver color. 1971's were painted in a blue/green/grey color that is impossible to describe accurately. The only two generally available Pontiac engine paints are the ? - '65 "baby blue" and the '66 - '70 metallic blue.

To the best of my knowledge, no one packages the correct '71 engine paint in a rattle can. For my '72 455HO engine I ordered a quart of the correct paint from Scott Tiemann (the famous Pontiac resto guru) in Michigan and a good friend sprayed my engine for me. The 455HO intakes WERE painted from the factory.

The intake and valve covers were all painted engine color. No chrome anywhere on '71 and later engines.

I have several spray cans of engine paint that were sold by NAPA in the 80's. They are "Pontiac Blue/Gray and it is as close as I have seen to the factory '71 Pontiac engine color. The paint was made by Martin-Senour and the paint code number on the spray can was #7957. I doubt if it is made any longer but you might be able to get a paint store to mix it for you. I also have a couple of cans of the early 60's color paint. It is a lighter pale blue and the paint number is different so I'm pretty sure that #7957 was the '71 color paint.
