i just got my car driving again and it has no brakes yet, but when I put it in drive it makes a big clunk as if it just wants to take off, idle too high? and is it because i havent bled the breakes yet?

Idle too high?

I had same problem with a '74 400/th400. Had a shift kit which complicated things. fortunatly a wise old friend replaced my centrifugal weight springs on my HEI distributor and the problem went away. In fact I installed a MSD 6AL and was able to get this stock engine to Idle sooo smothly at 425 to 450rpm's that when i shifted into gear you could not hear of feel a thing. Increadable smoothness. people would come up and admire the car and then be shocked that it was running so smoothly and quietly.
But Anyway... he replaced my agressive aftermarket centrifugal spring(s?) with some other combo and the problem went away. no other tuning was nessessarry. I'me still not sure on that one but It astounded me when I thought I knew it all. Bing,Bang Boom and it was all over. Done, fixed

Check tranny fluid. Low level will cause that also.

Are you sure the driveshaft is the right length? after a tranny swap my car would clunk badly in and out of gear...turns out there simply wasnt enough of the tranny yoke sticking into the trans causing slop.
