Believe the '75 models were even heavier. Their pellet type cat coverters contributed to that. Stock performance wise, the '75 400's were the first to receive the beveled top pistons that further lowered C/R. Car & Driver tested all the new for '75 model American performance offerings & the Cosworth Vega edged out the Vette & Pontiac's 400 powered TransAm in 0-60 times. The late season 455-4spd T/A's weren't out yet, but were no barn burners bone stock.

That makes sense.... I'm not sure. The 75's came with lighter transmissions and less exhaust pipe. The 455 cars were all four speeds and used a smaller muffler. Also, the 557 blocks started in 75 along with a lighter crankshaft. The intake manifold didn't have the massive EGR bump. I'm guessing that the larger rear glass weighed less than the additional steel in the quarter panels.

I had a one owner 76 400 4 spd Formula that was ordered as a "performance" car. It was an under performer. I really think my 80 301 (tuned) was faster and that clocked 20 mpg on the highway..... It (the 76) turned into a fantastic car when I installed a blueprinted RA III with headers.... What a fun car!

Wish I had an abody as light as these guys, I'd be running a half second faster lol

Yep Ive talked to Dan about that who sees them on the scales frequently at the ps drags. The 74 up models are more times than not a bit heavier.

Like I mentioned my 70 formula just optioned with ps and pdb and an auto is 3690 without driver. If I remove the rally II's and toss on a set of aluminum wheels it's 3650. Yes those rallys are 10 lbs a piece heavier, those things are boat anchors.
I'm 210-215 depending on what I have for breakfast so the bird is roughly at 3900 lbs. When going down the track on rally II's.

Just for giggles my 69 RS Z is 3420 with a full tank and no driver.

My son's fox body LX loaded with options, sun roof, power lumbar seats, ac, cruise, etc is only 3110 lbs. Full tank and no driver.

And the one that blows me away is the current project, a 72 Vega wagon I've restored. Currently sitting complete without the engine trans. Full interior packed with sound deadener and dynomat, full stereo system and 20 gallon fuel system intact and plumbed. It currently scales at 1560 lbs LOL
It's waiting for a 500hp aluminum headed SBC and an automatic trans. Figure how much that might add and youre probably looking at around a 2200-2300 lbs rocket. Cracks me up.

Here's one that blows people's minds.

56 nomad, complete car, full interior, these things have a fully boxed frame and glass that's a 1/4" thick. Fairly big cars that everyone thinks are tanks and very heavy. Nope, it scales at 3550 lbs with a SBC and 4 speed.
I raced that thing all the time in the 80's and always wondered how that sbc ran so good in such a big car. Never scaled it back then. Now I know why lol. It's not as heavy as it looks

Don’t just look at the added poundage that factory mag wheels add to car .
That added weight is almost twice as detrimental because it’s also rotating weight slowing the car down.

That’s amazing on that Nomad . I don’t consider the 68-72 A body’s big cars . A few neighbors call it a boat - but they all drive trucks & suvs ? To me it doesn’t drive or handle heavy , it feels light and brakes light . The largest , heaviest and oldest car that I’ve ever owned was a 76 coupe deville . Man it was comfortable and nice , but you could feel the weight .

My 65 GTO hardtop was 3940 with me in it. No A/C, but it does have added weight from the boxed frame, Dana 60, IA2. 3/4 tank of gas with a spare tire and some tools in the trunk too so that added some weight.

Will weigh it again sometime with the trunk empty and without me in the car to see what the scale says. Probably a smidge under 3700.

I've had girlfriends that weighed more than that.

Agree I've never considered 68-72 a-bodies big cars. In fact during that time period they were just considered your basic size car. F-bodies were small in comparison and the first gens were considered part of the pony car wars. Today compact in comparison is vastly different than when we were brought up.

My '04 GTO surprised me when I rolled it over the scales. Has to be 3 feet shorter than my Trans Am, all aluminum 5.7 3860 with my 150 lbs in it !
With the iron RAIV headed 400(a light 557 block) A/C and a spare the 78 TA weighed 3950. Needed the spare for extra weight to make a class.

I had to get my 94 C3500 6.5 Diesel truck weighed for registration and without a spare, tailgate, aluminum wheels, 1/4 tank of fuel and without me in it she clocked the scales at 6040 Lbs.
