Took my '70 to a local Pontiac show yesterday. Fellow there had a nice 70 Convertible Judge (4-spd) that he picked up at Mecum auction. Otheres told me that he paid $170,000 for the car. I told them that I think someone put the "1" in front of the "70,000". Am I crazy, or does $170K for a non-RA IV Judge convertible seem completely out of whack? It was a very nice car, lots of options, though the paint didn't appear concours.
You can see the car here: 1970 Judge

Auction prices have gone stupid-crazy lately. I haven't picked up a Hemmings for a while, but can't imagine that asking prices in that magazine are quite that high. What are '71 The Judge convertible values topping out at if a '70 RAIII, in less than #1 condition is bringing that kind of bling?

That guy is betting that the car will be worth that one day--not today.

My first thought was, if it was truly an investmetn-based decision, that you would fare much better by buying $800K in eBay stock then a 1970 Judge, but then I realized, if you have $800K to spend on a car, ROI is probably not the motivating factor.

The one a Mecum was even painted the wrong color or had a wrong color top. There was a post about the car recently on another board. The guy who restored the car posted.

I spoke with the owner of the car. He was a really nice guy. I think he was a little surprised that he didn't win 1st place (he tied for 2nd). There was a beautiful 1968 that took first (tied). Looked like a 300 point car. Wasn't anything particularly unique about it, may have had an HO motor in it, but it was beautifully restored by the origianl owner.
I will post some pics of the show tonight.

about 1 year ago that judge was on ebay for a buy it now price of $55,000 in sloatsburg NY. I went down with a deposit check for the car, sat in it, started it etc. When I present the owner with a check he tells me OH-someone beat ya to it, by a few hours. I wanted to drop dead at that moment. The car at the time was Granada Gold (not the original color), and it was very nice. I then call the new owner and offer him up to $5-10,000 more.( he still had not even seen the car) He then swears to me he wants to hold onto it for a little while and that I will get the first shot at it. Months go by and we are still comunicating. Finally he goes to me you know what I'm going to sell the car at auction. I said well what about your promise to me? Well thats the way it goes, I'm gonna auction it. Then it sells at mecum for $180,000. F&^$%$k

I talked to a previous ownwer of the $180,000 judge. He purchased the car back in the early 80's for $2500 I think the car was originally black but the interior was originally gold.

In 1986, if you used that same $2500 to purchase Microsoft at its IPO price of $21, you would have bought roughly 120 shares. If you didn’t buy/sell any more shares, today, after 9 splits, you would have 34,650 shares of MSFT, which would be worth $963,532.80

good point !!
It has always been the case. Buy the car because you like it.... not as an investment. over the long haul they are bad investments. I have been a Vette collector for many years, and speculators have ruined that hobby. You can't touch a correct 67' Big Block for under $100K today. |

There is a 71 Judge hardtop on Ebay right now with a "Buy it Now" price of $80,000. After looking at the photos you'll have to agree it's one of the nicer resto's I've seen. I do know you can't always trust pictures.
