Question Mechanical fuel pumps--any good ones?

I've seen threads on other forums about crappy mechanical fuel pumps. On here there was a thread

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=805930

where Airtex pumps were discussed and seemed to be something to avoid. What about the rebuildable pumps from Holley and Edelbrock, possibly RobbMc. Are any of these a better choice than Airtex or do all mechanical pumps have problems?

For those of us on a budget, the mechanical pump are realistic choices. The new tank with in-tank electric pump may be the best but $$$$. Thoughts??

Ive only had mine on for a a few miles but Robb Mc was a pleasure to deal with. I dont think Ive heard a bad word about the guy from the Pontiac comminuty. When you talk to them you talk to him personally. I didnt even buy my pump directly from him. I bought it second-hand and wanted him to look it over. He couldnt have treated me like a secondclass citizen but didnt. Gave me a very reasonable price to take apart and inspect the pump, and charged the same as he quotes on new pumps he sells for the alterations I wanted.

I have no problem with Holley or Summit, any of the big companies like that. But its nice to be able to put some money into a small business pocket too.

I've been using AC Delco and Airtex with no problems at all. Other than too much engine for a stock pump to feed at WOT. And a pusher pump (when needed) takes care of that.

I've yet to open up the pump in that thread but I have a feeling I won't find anything unusual or broken.......its just a noisy pump.

There was an old thread I found where someone who sold them was discussing all the Airtex pump failures as compared to other brands so they stopped carrying them.

Maybe I just got a bad one idk.

I ordered a Delphi pump and a Cater pump to compare & replace it but haven't received them yet.

You can still get a new AC Delco mechanical pump for a good price.

Default Fuel pump

Hate to jinx myself. But have been using an Airtex replacement fuel
Pump in my car for years. It was bought at Napa and is the small
Body type for use without AC. Has a return and been pleased so far.
Liked have all fuel lines a direct Fit

At one time Ken Crocie came up with a Cater pump mod where you could use a Chebby 6 valve pump main body and rework/convert the Pontiac pump arm to fit on the pump.

Ken C has a habit of coming up with these really cool "modded" parts.
Maybe he will describe the mod further. The parts should still be out there.

I run the Robbmc 550 and a Quickfuel Q850 carb on my 461 Stroker with stock fuel lines & pickup in my '66 Lemans with no issues. Drag strip and road course racing it's never failed or cut out.

The AC pumps are getting harder to find for application specific stuff. Some are advertised, but the AC pumps I've bought in the last few years no longer have the AC logo on the housing. So what are you really getting???

So I don't get stuck on the AC pump thing because of that. Carter factory type replacement pumps have treated me fine as long as the rest of the fuel system is up to snuff. I've gone 12's on stock large body mechanical pumps in a 4,000 lbs. car.

I'm going to try a RobbMc pump on one car though and see how things work out.

I put the Pontiac arm on the Chevy 6 valve pump and I still wouldn't keep my Qjet happy. That's why the 850 Holley is on my car.

i ran the edelbrock pump on my 467 stroker with alum heads & a q-jet... was good for 520 hp on the dyno & ran to 11.7 in the 1/4. BUT the car would have starvation issues if i tried to run any harder at teh drag strip.

swapped to a robbmc 1100 pump dialed all the way down to 7psi (basically the 550) & the car went as low as 11.28 with no other changes & seems to have more in it once i can address traction problems & i plan to add a regulator & turn the pump psi up.

the robbmc pumps are high quality & rebuildable & the customer service is great.

If you go the RobbMc route I suggest going with the 1100 and dialing it down. I used the 550 with 1/2 inch line from the RobbMc fuel sender all the way to float bowl and I still needed a pusher pump. I've gone fuel injection since so it's a non issue for me now.

Sounds like you has a Needle and Seat (VOLUME) issue with your Q-Jet and the Holley with Bigger Bowls and TWO Needle and Seat assemblies overcame the problem.

My BG Tri-Power manifold with 3 Holley race bowls (Holley 2 BBL carbs) has never had an issue either. BG 2 BBL carbs were designed for a 327 Chebby small block application.

Carter M6122 Muscle Car Series. 40 GPH/5.5-6.5 PSI

I have a Holley red as a pusher too but haven't used it as the Carter keeps up fine on my 455 w. Holley 770. Lots of bowl capacity with the Holley, don't know how a Qjet would perform.
