Here is my 1980 SJ that I have owned since 1983. It has 301-4BBL "W" code with limited slip rear. Was ordered with leather interior w/A51 seats. Car is pretty well loaded other than no lighted vanity mirrior, no power antenna, or corner lamps. Had no winters and one re-paint in 1991. Car has 55K miles.

Here's some inspiration, I bought this out of a Salvage yard as you see it and cut it up for parts, 100% rust free car. At least it will be used to save others, better than what was going to happen to it.

Here's one I used as a driver, a 1980, has a 1976 Pontiac 400 in it, not currently on the road.

Here it goes, the Hood is made from 2 different hoods. I cut the center out of a
trans am and welded it into the grand prix hood. A lot of measuring was the hardest part of the whole hood. Then ground down the welds and then normal bodywork. I thought it came out pretty good. It gets alot of attention at shows and on the street. The tach is off of a GTO.

The seats are from a 79 Grand Prix SJ with leather covers.
The door panels are from a 85 Grand Prix with the same treatment. There were only a few mods to the door to make them work. A couple or hours and they were done.

It just take a little imagination and work and you can turn your car into something to be as proud of as I am mine. Thanks for your kinds works, makes all those hours of building, painting, buffing and even cussing worth it.

What are the measurements from the back of the hood to the shaker opening? I have a 79 GP that I recently purshased and am going to be putting a Pontiac 400 into it, and I also want to do the same hood conversion. Did you use a standard TA aircleaner?

Here's a current pic of my 79 LJ

Thumbs up here are some...

the black on is my 79 Lj. black cloth bucket seats, handling package, snowflake wheels, power seat, a/c, power windows and lock, air, guage package, remote passenger window, litter basket, had an 8 track according to the build sheet, and a killer 2.19 posi. oh, and raised white letter tires.
had a 301/4bbl. i'm thinkin this was a special ordered car. not nearly as nice looking as everyone elses, but underneath it all, it's all new. one day the paint and bumpers might shine. the first pic with the snowflakes is when i first got it...the second pic is how it looked a few months ago...it sits better now tho...with a totally rebuilt front and rear suspension.

the blue one, it's so over the top it's kinda cool. i had a 78 Sj that was lowered and had old school 48 spoke Cragar Tru-Spokes. it was a black/black quarter roof/carmine cloth buckets, 301/4bbl car. damn nice car it was. sold it...miss it

Default More 78-80 GP pics

Here is a Fremont gold '80 I just happened across three weeks ago.
Was 301 4bbl. Now SBC. Paint is redone. Professional job. I got the sellers info. Asking $7500, which is kind of high IMO. Still a nice car.

Woops, Pics are over 300KB. I'll try to shrink them and get them on here asap.

In the past, I have owned 5 Grand Prix's: '76 SJ 400/TH400, '77 L J 301 w/moonroof & all toys, '78 GP w/301, '78 GP w/231/3 spd manual, & '79 L J 301 w/all toys.

The '78 manual trans car was probably the car I had the most fun with. At it's latest configuration, it had a 400 ci small block Chevy with a T56 six speed & a 9 inch ford rear with 3.89s in it. I had 16" formula wheels (later style) on it and Flowmaster exhaust. Other than that, it looked stock. It was an everyday car for me for about 5-6 years. I put alot of miles on it. I added a TA steering box (2 turns), sway bars front & rear, lowered it a bit, etc, etc. It got 15-16 mpg around town & ran 13.9 in the 1/4. I sure do miss that car.

My '79 LJ was a sweet 26,000 mile car when I got it. I put a 455/TH400 combo in it, but never raced it. I saw it a few years later running at the local track running 12.50s but the guy told me he swapped the cam & intake when he bought the car. It was a nice car, and I had them both at the same time, but the stick car was more fun, so I sold the L J.

The stick car was an oddly optioned car, though. It had the Buick 231 (odd fire), a 3 speed manual w/floorshift & a vynil bench seat, no A/C, radio delete, and no power brakes. I added Power brakes right after I got it. I still have the V6 flywheel & pedals out of it. The car is looong gone, though.

I'll see if I can dig up pics of the '78. It had original paint on it, but looked decent. The car was never a show piece, but that was never my intention.

Good luck with your project.

I'd ditch the keystone classics & go with a 17" HRE or BBS (high end euro type wheel). Then a LS1/T56 swap for power.
