How do I cut open an oil filter?
So I broke in my fresh engine this summer. Yesterday I changed the oil and checked for metal particles. I was actually surprised at just how clean the oil was. I'd like to cut open the filter to see what it trapped, but I'm not quite sure what the best way is to cut it open. I could certainly cut it open with my horizontal bandsaw, but I'm afraid that would introduce metal particles from cutting it.
I'm open for suggestions..... Any ideas? |

Yeah the tool is the fancy pants way if you have the money and want to wait for it.
Just have it with a pair of tin shears

Geez, they got a damn tool for everything. I would never thought to look for something like that, nor would I pay $40 for it. Especially when tin shears do the same thing (it is nice tho).

Would an air chisel work, or would it add metal to the filter?

It may deform it too much?
The metal isn't that thick. Could probably use a strong knife and slice it around the perimeter? The tin snips would work good too.

I like all of the solutions, but I'm not gonna do this too many times, so cheap / free is important. I have muliple pairs of snips, so guess I'll try that first. If it doesn't work, guess I'll have to use an old buck knife.

I stick the tip of thick knife in the side, bang down on the handle with my hand, then get the snips in that hole and just go to town.
