Yes, that is a '67 intake with the heat chamber/crossover that wasn't used in '66.
As suggested you should be able to block it off with a steel shim/gasket.

Would it be better to block it off from the bottom of the intake? Between the two manifolds?
And, if it was made this way, what kept this from overheating all carbs? |

Looking again at your pic of the carb it appears you have a '67 carb.
If so are you using a '67 base gasket?

Yes, and this is what it did after 5 or so minutes.

What did yours come off of?

This passage is a Factory design for cold start.
What condition is the Exhaust Heat Control Gate/Valve? Seems/Looks like it may not be opening up upon warm-up.

I have a few different sets. For sure some 66 sets.

After blocking off the exhaust ports in the intake we got it to run long enough to do the break-in!

Jeff is right on point about the valve in the front 1/2 of the manifold.
If you can’t get it to work right with the bimetallic spring you might be able to remove it Or wire it in the open position. |

The valve was not working correctly even before we got it running, so the spring has been removed and the valve hung in the open position. The combination of that and blocking off the exhaust crossover in the intake has made all the difference in the world.

After figuring out that two of the followers were made wrong and hanging both the intake and exhaust valves open on #2 (and fixing that issue) it's now hitting on all six and running great! Finally took it for a spin last night and, while there's still a little timing work to be done, she's a strong engine. Couldn't be happier with the end result thus far! It's been one hell of a journey but totally worth it in my opinion

Neat Project.
Just curious as to what do you have planned for the rest of it?

Mike, the eventual plan is to clear coat the exterior and completely restore the interior. Other than that, just drive it and have fun

Well, been a while... I've got about 2500 miles on the engine now and decided to install a Holley Quadrajet Sniper system on it. I'm still getting the kinks worked out of the system but, all in all, it's working well now. I'll get some pics uploaded this weekend.

Just caught onto this unique build. Really Cool
Tough break on that 67 Intake / Exhaust Pre-Heat 1 year only , and was even used on 67 GTO V8 engines. SS plate from the factory on them. Some carbs have had meltdowns and warpage when the SS was discarded, or unknown it was needed going back from scratch. What kind of transmission is in the car ? Pontiac radio still in it ? |

How is the Holley EFI working for you? Any difference in power? Let me know if you need a cover for the cam sprocket. |

It's been a while guys... The car was down for a couple months while I searched for a transmission (after blowing mine up). Ended up going back with another Powerglide because I found a killer deal on a rebuilt unit. @Baron: yes, the Pontiac radio is still in it and I figured out a way to open it up and stuff modern guts into it, so it's now a bluetooth radio that looks totally stock.
66 Sprint: I finally got the EFI system to work really well. Straight out of the box it had some pretty big issues (some were actually mechanical issues do to shoddy shipping), but after a lot of tinkering and time on the Holley forums I've got it running really well. Much better than it did with the Quadrajet on it. It'll smoke tires all day long! Here is the one pic of the unit that I've got with me. This is in the process of wrapping the harness in Faraday tape then covering that with cloth harness tape. More to come... |
