On the black part of the egg crate, mine is faded. Can you use a plastic restorer or should you try to paint it? Thanks Steve

What did you guys do about the chrome surround? Just take it to a chrome shop?

Surrounds are pot metal, it needs to go to a place that specifically restores pot metal trim, who can strip, repair, and re-chrome.

Hold on to your butt when you get quotes, that stuff is not cheap. As an example, the one place in TN I sent mine to for a quote gave me a $750+ estimate for a pair of 70 GTO trim pieces.

Holy cow, I knew restoring a car isn't cheap, but that's way more than I would've expected. Oh well, thanks for the heads up.

Mine weren't bad at all, no pitting, just some 'peppering' from rock shots over the years in the chrome.

But, in order to re-chrome them, you have to go through the stripping process, and that can uncover areas of the pot metal that needs to be repaired.

I ended up finding good, used ones, cleaned them up, and called it done.

Do they not sell repop surrounds for the '70? I replaced them on the '68 because the repops were so good that it didn't make sense not to. My originals were pretty good but I could see the difference when I held them up to the repops. Slightly hazy.

If someone repops them, please point me to who!

Wow...you are correct. In fact, I don't see any grille moulding for any year except '68/'69. That's surprising to me. You'd think that it wouldn't be any harder to do the '70 to '72. I know the earlier years may be anodized and such but '70 I would think they could offer.

Found my quote for the grill surround re-chroming. It's was over $650, not $750 as I originally posted.

Quote attached...

The egg crates on my 70 GTO grille are faded. How do I freshen them up? Use a plastic restorer or paint them? Sent my grille molding off to get re-chromed. I will let you know how they came out. They said it will be about 3 weeks before the were done.
