Default 1969 Local race photo.

1969 Tri City Dragway, Saginaw, Michigan. Adjacent to the Tri City International airport. No longer in use but tower and grandstands still in place. Closed down in 1978 if I recall correctly. Local dealership car. Garber Pontiac, now known as Garber Buick.

Rear wheels look like Mopar ? If so perhaps a Ford/Mopar rear end ?

They're Motor Wheel Spyders. Mopar may have had them as a factory available option, but they were also available in the aftermarket for general purchase with fitments for other brands. If you search on 'motor wheel spyder' you'll find pictures of them on various GM, Ford and AMC cars.

I have a set of these wheels, I think they are great looking. They were available in different bolt patterns, 4 1/2, 4 3/4, and 5 on 5. Also available in different wheel widths. Mine are 4 3/4 that I got from an original owner car that were installed new in 1971.

Truman Fields ran those wheels on his 72 GTO, and got some sponsorship funds from them, possibly...May have used those wheels on his Firebirds, also...

I agree, these are great looking wheels, especially on the 68-72 cars. Are yours 14x6? That seems to be the most common size based on what little I’ve found. Apparently they can be re-hooped to 15 inches. Never heard of that term before ‘re hooped’...

Man look at that paint job, I am not wanting to see that come back anytime soon but the hours and dedication to that scheme is amazing. The amount of hours that go into something like that is something to admire super cool

Great old picture and thanks for sharing. My question that won't be answered is where is the car now?

I just found Vintage color video of the Garber Pontiac running at Tri City Dragway, I also hung out and raced there the last couple of years it was open. Before that I was to young to get that far out of town. The Garber car is at 30 seconds. Looks like Crager wheels on it though.

Thanks Tim,

That track was my 1st real experience with drag Racing. Before that I was able to tag along with my (18 years ) older brother to some NASCAR and Trans Am races in the early 70's.

But being able to actually compete got me even more hooked on cars.

Also I found this picture showing what could be my old 65 GTO (probably not) showing just how close MBS's runways were to the track! According the the N-number on the 737-200 it was operated by United from 9-1968 to 11-1976 But that's is as close to a date as I can find.

I bought the GTO in the spring of 76 so slight odds it could be.

Tim John, or Jeff -

Do either of you remember a road on the way to Tri-City where only 1/2 was paved?

It was paved in one direction, so if you were on the gravel side you'd drive on the wrong side until there was traffic, and then move over to the gravel to let the vehicle pass. After they cleared you'd hop back on the paved portion to continue on your way.

I was told it had something to do with taxes.

Ring any bells with either of you? It's something that has always stuck with me.

K

The "Fugitive Vette" wheelstander - 50 seconds in - and Bill "Maverick" Golden's Little Red Wagon. I might have been there that day.

Keith if I remember correctly it was Hospital Road (or 8-mile road) between Freeland road & Sarle road. I think the middle of the road was the township dividing line.

But I do not know the specifics on what the tax issue was.
