New here Post #2 ...
Hi friends, I only recently discovered this site ...
I've had this car since 82' and am in the midst of earnestly getting back to a long stalled restoration. Body came off frame etc etc. Car is #s matching except for rear end which is a 12 bolt from an SS w/ 3.73s ** My #1 post here btw was a "WTB 69 Posi rear" Any ideas? ; ) ** I look forward to reading through past posts, sharing and taking advantage of the expertise here. Thanks for the welcome fellas ..
This is embarrassing but my Dad and I began this restoration in 96'. My career as it were was beginning exactly then and took me hard down it's path. It didn't help that car was/is 2.5 hrs away. Time (reallllllly) passed as did my Dad (last August) but now I'm IN and really determined. I get up to the car at least one long weekend a month, know exactly what parts I have (I've taken pics of <everything>) and am sourcing what I need via assembly manuals and GREAT forums like this and The GTO Forum .. I'm really getting my head around how to accomplish it all. Once I get rally gauges/clock back from Pete Serio (they didn't need much) I'll start in in ernest with dash and vents. Meanwhile I'm chipping away at the car from a few different places at once. The more I get my head around the project the more questions I have. Guess I'll save those for the sub forums. Howdy Brethren ..
Going up to the car next weekend and wanted to run some things by the board. - So far I haven't been able to locate car's windshield and drivers side door glass .. If memory serves windshield was clear except for some tinting across top. Where would y'all suggest I source this type of windshield and door glass while at it? - Gauges should be back from Pete Serio by then so I'm about to embark on reassembly of dash. Afterwards, when thinking about Dash, upper ventilation duct work, climate controls (no AC) and lower floor vents .. Is there any particular order I should install these in? - I need to better align nose and also install valence ... should I wait till I have hideaway's plumbed (and functioning) before doing this? - Car has drum brakes and master cylinder is full. Is it normal that pre-bleeding lines, when I depress brake pedal all I get is a short throw and THUNK! .. a very hard stop? I've got the entire interior to do including one window regulator, probably 2/3rds of car's trim, front/rear windows need to go in, under hood ram air assembly .. lots more obviously. I'm just spitballing here .. I know I could have started posts in sub forums, just figured I'd juice this corner of the site a little. Thanks for the opportunity! I find the best sequence to reassemble the dash area is to first install the kick panels with the lower cables already installed.
Front seats should be out along with steering column. The plastic speednuts on the firewall that hold the upper drivers side of the dash should be replaced. front speaker installed. Then I install the bezel, gauge cluster, wood grain trim, headlight switch, lighter, heater control head (with cables connected), side vent bezels, vent deflectors, the part of the ducts that bolt to the dash. Install the dash harness to the dash components (fuse block disconnected from the firewall). lastly I install very loosely the nuts on studs on top of the dash above the glovebox opening. Next I install the assembled dashpad in place quickly snugging those nuts through the glove box opening area so it can't fall. Then put the four bolts that hold the bottom corners and the steering column opening. Then put the three screws through the top of the bezel. Next you can screw the fuseblock into place, connect the parking brake switch, the door jam light switches. Connect the speedo cable to the cluster (a piece of cake without the column in place. Then I do the radio connections, ashtray (including light) and finally the glove box and door. Finish up with the steering column and seats etc. If you have a 4 speed you might want to remove the handle or wrap up the handle to prevent scratching the dash during install. This method works like a gem, not surprising because this is how they installed the dash at the factory. As for glass the windshield was either completely clear or it was the optional tinted windshield which had a light greenish-blue tint with a darker shaded top strip. Side windows were either clear of tinted optionally. Your brake situation sounds like you might have the wrong master or it's seized.
