Head gasket?
My heads were just rebuilt and machinist said they were never done before.
Looking at the old gaskets it appears puzzling. The part # starts with vic-2 something. Is that normal for oem or? It’s not a big deal but if the heads were off it makes no sense why. |

Victor is a well known manufacturer of head gaskets.
Heads never being done before, and head never been off are two different things. There are many reasons cylinder heads would be removed and not receive any attention themselves. Blown gasket, work done on the block internals that didn't require work to the heads, even simple things like broken off exhaust studs. |

So they never made gaskets for GM at factory I assume?
I guess it’s water under the bridge now anyway but I was curious. |

I'm not aware that any branded gaskets were used at the factory. Typically any part number they show will be a GM part number.

I'm glad Tom spoke up.
Victor Reinze was an OE supplier for GM gaskets. I do not believe they were OE when these engines were new, but they were OE in the 1980's for sure. I believe that at any given time GM had several suppliers for just about everything.

At the finish line today and then an accident. I guess jack slipped off cross member or something and damaged the oil pan now.
I need a replacement pan and maybe an oil pick up guessing. I ordered another one piece pan gasket just in case. What are my options to get a stock replacement pan? |

Dang...that sucks.
You'll probably have to pull the engine to replace that pan in your '69. If you want an original pan I'm sure someone onsite has one they'd sell cheap.

Yep. Pulling motor tomorrow. It was a huge bummer.

Well if there’s a silver lining the low cylinder came up to 165. All cylinders about 5 lbs apart.

If the pan was not holed, just take it off and beat out the dent - no big deal. Install a new oil pump and screen while the pan is off, this is just future insurance and you won't have to pull the engine again to replace it should it fail down the road. |

I hadn’t thought about that but good idea. How often or what’s life expectancy on a pump?
Any particular brand you recommend? It’s a ho 400. |

The Mellings oil pump is fine and what most use, just make sure it is the 60PSI rated pump. Pontiac also offered a 40 PSI pump and was used on the lower performance cars. You will want to take it to your machine shop and have them attach the oil pick-up/screen and put a tack weld, or pin, to secure it better than just relying on the press fit. You also will want a new gasket that goes between the pump/block. I can't recall if it comes with the pump or you have to get one - which is easy enough to get. |

I’m going to order a milling 60 psi. Is it just particular part # or options? I haven’t had much luck getting the right the the first time lately.
Also, is there a matching pick up that attaches that I need to know? I’m probably just going to order from oreilys by me. M54f or 10541? Last edited by supersport#69; 01-16-2021 at 03:04 PM. |

The pickup will come with the pump. Like was mentioned above, don't forget to secure it to the pump by some means. It's meant to be a press fit but sometimes they part ways and you don't want that!

Napa only had sealed power oil pumps and oreilys just has the standard pressure one.
What part number do I need for the melling oil pump? Also, in addition to the pan being crushed in the pick up tube did get bent. Another discovery is the front bottom of pan must have been rubbing on the frame because it was bare from rubbing. The frame is a hair higher than center link. In the summer I replaced motor mounts and put the cheapest ones that fit. He thinks that might have contributed (not sure) to motor sitting a hair lower...possible cheap rubber? Any good options for oem style motor mounts? |
