STEELCITYFIREBIRD,
Paul mentioned that when he found the bad distributor bushing, he also noticed the distributor gear had some damage. He had me send him another gear. I never saw a picture of the gear. The tech that came by to do some testing noticed the new distributor gear. He described it as having uneven wear. He said he was pretty surprised to see wear on a distributor gear that has less than 2 hours of idle time. It wasn't anything drastic. I'll get some some pictures of the gear and post it as soon as I can. I'm still waiting to hear what is going to happen next with this engine!

Did you ever try swapping the cam with a known good one to eliminate that variable? A lot of what you’ve found and said points to a bad distributor drive gear on the cam. As I see it; uneven distributor driven gear wear, odd distributor bushing wear, noise from the distributor area and distributor driveshaft whiteness marks. All points to the last variable in that area. . . Camshaft distributor drive gear.

67gtospud,
We never tried another cam. I don't know what the next step is but I don't think me and my friends installing another cam is not part of that step. I guess I'll find out soon.

ponjohn,
Yeah..we've had the pan off a couple of times over the last 2 years. Right now the engine is in the car but I don't think it will be for long. I'm still waiting to hear from Jeff but if I don't hear anything soon, the motor will be out within a week.

Might as well pull it, and have it ready for pick up. Maybe I was close, with my Cam/Distributor gear guess? I hope that's all it is. ; )

TedRamAirII,
Yeah..the engine is going to be pulled real soon. It's not going back to Arizona though. We are working something out to keep the motor here in Virginia. I'm trying to work out a plan with Jeff and we're still working out the details. I hope it's something simple but after close to 180 hours of diagnosis time and two years without driving this car, who knows what it could be.

Engine needs to come out, quit "dicking around". Waste of time till it comes apart. Good idea keeping engine local. No use paying for a another dyno session and end up with the same knock. crazy

455GRIN,
Yeah, I'm hoping this is coming to a conclusion soon. I may be able to finally take this car for a ride. I'm looking forward to it!

68 461 Bird,
I hope to have the engine pulled this weekend. Looks like Paul is flying in on Wednesday to break down the motor and look for the problem. Hopefully this will be ending soon.

Great news! I think everyone here is on the edge of their seat waiting to hear what the problem is and gets resolved quickly.

Yeah, it's been a long road to get here and I'm hoping this will be the time that's its finally taken care of. I've been texting with Jeff and explained that I didn't want to send the motor back to Arizona. I asked him to send a gasket kit and some oil and explained that even if its determined to be a part failure (cam, cam bearings or whatever the part may be), that I would not buy any more parts for this engine. He agreed and he is sending a box a parts (oil, gaskets.. I assume). I've offered Paul to stay at my house and promised him that my wife wouldn't cook. Haha.

MarkS57,
Hahaha. No she doesn't read the forum but she knows she can't cook. Hahaha. She just wants this car running. For two years, every time we're done working on the car she comes in the garage and asks "Is it fixed yet"? She's heard the same answer from me for two years.."No not yet". I have to admit, I married well because she doesn't give me any grief.

Ha, seems like the Muppets at Romac haven't fixed a thing in over a decade !!!
I alerted them to this problem back in 2005, they told me there was nothing wrong with the unit.

After sending them photos and CAD files of the issues, they still couldn't understand what the problem was, and then told me to just machine it so it would fit LOL (modify an SFI rated product, effectively machining off the rear retention of the out hub ????)
I suggested maybe they should have done this in the first place LOL
My initial query was below.

Have measured the hub to pully mounting face and the Romac balancer agrees with the stock one (give or take)
The main difference appears to be the width if the Romac outer ring etc which as the attached drawing shows is 0.395" further back towards the block than the stock unit
This causes it to foul on aftermarket timing covers as well as the stock timing cover and sump !!!
There is only one part number for Pontiacs (and only one required for all engies from 326-455) and this balancer will fit none of them without modifying the timing cover and sump.
What do you suggest we do ????
