Default rebuilt 389

Ideas on what a supposedly rebuilt 1964 389 would be worth. Basically stock rebuild of 303 hp engine with over bore and mild (?) cam. Has about 3000 miles. I have no idea of the quality of the rebuild but it runs good. I know it can be a crap shoot.

Less than the price of parts and machining.

Besides the miles on it how long ago was the rebuilding of it done?

Being a 303 hp motor then it should have a valve train ( Heads ) that oil's thru the push Rods I believe.
Is a MT motor with a flywheel?

Frankly this is one of my favorite motors... They make excellent street motors with the 068 cam.. With the 1964 heads, I used to hammer a freeze plug into the exhaust crossovers and cut the exhaust crossover off the stock 4 bbl. AFB intake.. They like a lot of initial timing. I used to run the initial up till it wouldn't start then back off 4 degrees, then add what's left to the mechanical to achieve 36 total. I never liked the vacuum advance and didn't need it with the hi initial setting..

It oils thru the rocker studs, It is not a GTO engine but it is manual 3 speed trans engine.

Come on. Doesn't anyone have an idea what it might be worth? Just tell me what you would pay if you needed one.

$500.

Since you really don’t have any solid information or receipts proving what machine work or parts went into the build you won’t get much for it. With documentation you might get more for it.

Being a ‘64 engine makes it a bit of a hard sell, you really need to find a buyer with a ‘64 or earlier car that needs one.

Any used engine is hard to get any kind decent return on the money and time invested no matter what it is with the exception of rare performance engines.

Pontiac engines are scarce around here. If you can demonstrate that it runs. Doesn’t tick, knock, rattle etc I’d say a grand

I sold a 428 from a 68 for 850. It was setting so the cylinders were getting rusty, but guy who bought it built it and said all was good.I am certain he bored it .020 or.030

The 64 389 may or may not have block mounted starter holes. That would be a deal breaker for me.I would not have a use for it.

but a 389 block with starter holes on the block, if complete providing it turns over could be 250- 1000 depending on who needs it , numbers matching, rareity of pontiac engines in your area etc etc etc

I bought my 389 for 400 bucks. It was rough in one cylinder. Cleaned up at 4.120. Balanced crank accordingly. Runs excellent.

The 65 blocks seem to have a lot of meat at the cylinders.Overbore that much does not seem to be a problem. I am not gentle on the throttle either.
I did not build it to be a trailer queen. It gets driven.
Beenin paint shop for a while this summer.

Bart, Did all 64 blocks have block mount starter pad with holes drilled and tapped?

My 64 Bonneville did. It was a 4 Bbl 389, nothing special...

Yep. I pitched the heads from mine.I am running 1972 7H1 heads milled .045 to about 82 CC chambers size, and an aluminum intake. The old square bore intake had no appeal. I run a Quadrajet.

Chamber size on those old heads is way too small. Square bore intakes....Meh

Every ‘64 block I’ve come across had the starter holes drilled and tapped, 326 /389 /421 all did.

Yes, all '64 blocks had the starter mounted on the engine.. Anything earlier, including the 421's have the starter mounted on the bellhousing.

Some 64 389 blocks did not have bolt holes in the ears for a starter
The ears were not even big enough to be machined for a starter mount.

https://butlerperformance.com/i-2445...i-p010004.html

64 was a year that the new style mounting was used, but pontiac used up what they had in the big cars, with the rotohydramatic
Gotta watch when buying a 64 block.
